Iraqi Airways Past And Present

Sun Feb 18, 2007 8:24 am

Just came across www.iraqiairways.co.uk I see they are planning a London Gatwick to Baghdad but im wondering did they loose their LHR slots???. It also says they are flying to FRA IST ATH CAI and DXB . Im just wondering are these routes up and running yet and if so what A/C??

I see from some of the photos on here that Iraqi Airways flew to JFK LHR GIG BEG ATH AMS BKK to name a few. Does anyone have any old route maps or timetables. Also I would be interested to see any cabin interiors of their 747's. On their current website they say they have 747/747sp/757/767 etc... I didnt know they had all these still or is this website not correct??? Any info much appreciated.

Technically Iraqi Airways still has 5 747s, 3 742 Combis and two SPs. The Combis and one SP are stored in various places since 1991 when the UN banned Iraq to fly abroad. The second SP is a high-cycle former China Airlines aircraft, which was donated to Iraq by an UAE sheikh in 2000. this aircraft was at Bagdad when the airport was stormed by US troops in 2003. The SP survived intact unlike some 727s but has not been stored properly and its very unlikly it can be made airworthy again (probably it was scrapped since 2003 as there are no news since)

Timings look a little confused;

Quote:
Outbound: :
Departure : 13.20 London Gatwick
arrive: 06:30 Baghdad International

Inbound: :
Departure : 08:20 London Gatwick
arrive: 12:20 Baghdad International

Will this service fly via Athens or go direct I wonder, the site seems to suggest via Athens and it might explain the very long flight length! £481 one way... quite steep, but if it's safe to fly there in the future, could be quite interesting flight on the 767, although the fleet page still lists everything they used to own: http://www.iraqiairways.co.uk/en/fleet.htm

hmm...

Also on their Payment form at the bottom it asks where you would like to collect your tickets... the options are the following:

Quote:

Please select how you will collect the ticket :

- London Heathrow - Tickets will be available to collect at Iraqi Airways Check in Desk

- London Office – goes to Contact Us

- Baghdad Office - Tel - + 964 1537 2002

- Post – This option will cost you an extra £10 for UK delivery, and £25 for dilivery outside the uk

Heathrow? That can't be correct is it?

Also on their payment form, it is not a secure page so I would highly suggest that people not use this service at the moment due to the fact anyone could be collecting your information.

Regards
Mike

Hmm yeah seems a bit strange but have to say the websites not bad considering the state of Iraq at the moment. They have done a good job on their website. They have more info on there than some European airlines. If they do a LON-ATH and have traffic rights on it id be on that leg like a shot !!! Would be very interesting.

I find it interesting that they plan to fly to JFK in the future. Also, when did they start getting 757's? I hadn't heard they were even in the market for such a plane. All I heard about was a 767 from AC.
Good goes around!

Yes there are many questions and i do not know how old the website info is . I would love to see them up and running again though. They have had a hard time the last 25 years.

Regarding the LHR slots, these were forfeit when the UN banned Iraqi from flying abroad.
