Any New Int'l Air Service To/from SEA?

Tue Feb 20, 2007 11:50 am

I have lived in Seattle all of my life, and I must say, that for all of the aircraft, at least the widebodies, that Boeing has built, I am greatly dissapointed in the near "peacemeal" services to and from international destination from Seattle (aka Boeing-ville :-P)

I more more upset that with the white hot sales of Boeings 777's, that I haven't seen any new news for newer trans-pacific or -atlantic air service or with the newer 737's (-600 to -900er's) with new services from Canada (other than those of Alaska & Horizon Airlines and Air Canada), Mexico (other than those of Alaska Airlines), Central or South America.

I was sad to see Finnair, Aeroflot, and LTU's European serivces leave, no to mention UA hasn't used it's LHR service for several years, not to mention I was greatly upset to learn that Lufthansa was flying to/from PDX instead of SEA. The only newest service that I've seen in a while is that BA now has 10 flights a week, from their 7, to LHR (daily 747's and 3 777's) and a daily NW to AMS on a A330.

I was also sad when JAL, my favorite asian airline, Thai Airways and China Eastern left, UA cancelled both their Seoul and Hong Kong non-stop flights a long time ago and NW cancelled cancelled their Hong Kong, Seoul and Osaka non-stops and Taipei and Manila one-stop flights and changed their 747 flight to/from NRT to a lame-ass A330 !!!!! Sad

If anyone knows of any new international non-stop or direct air service to and from SEA in the near future, please post them.

Thank You.

well, we got new service in the past year or so from both Korean and China Airlines, so that is something  Smile

Rumors continue about a SEA-NGO route being served by ANA. I have also heard Philipines being mentioned around the water cooler, but that seems to have cooled a bit...

Are you serious? Seattle has a huge hub for Alaska and several daily international flights..You should be grateful man...I would love to see some of Seattle current operations at PDX...So we got a few crumbs thrown in our direction...jeeeeezzz

Let's call it the "proximity to YVR" impact. Just up I-5 across the border is Canada's Pacific gateway and second busiest airport with all sorts of trans-Pacific flights, not to mention a trans-Atlantic or two. I has an abundance of flights to/from the far-east that SEA-TAC noticeably lacks. This past year I have flown in and out of both SEA and YVR multiple times to/from SLC. While I like SEA, I do have to admit YVR is a better airport and coming at a better price for the airlines that use it comparatively. SEA has priced itself in the league with YYZ, MIA and DFW amongst others, and this only further hurts it's International flight aspirations.

BTW: WELCOME to a.net!!!!

Wellcome to a.net,
I hope you will get more variety in SEA someday. Just a reminder, it is what it is. I spent many many days spotting there, when I used live in Seattle, just to be able to see the unusual widebody. We would wait for the NW DC-10s, UA and the BA 747s, or the SAS 767, or Eva Air. But you have to remind yourself that you still have the Boeing Field, and you will be seeing the 787s daily before anyone else in the country.

SEA is underserved internationally. I think AF, LH, and CX could all do very well here. Frequencies don't need to be daily for a flight to be successful.

High airport costs do not really turn off international airlines, who charge high fares and can absorb them. Toronto and Miami have some of the biggest collections of international airlines in North America.

Good point, BUT in this instance the proximity to YVR is what in all likelihood does the real damage. SEA does have a China market that is easily in the same league as IAD or BOS, so this might be a good route authority to seek in the next few years for a U.S. flag carrier since all of the big Chinese carriers have moved in on YVR.

Wasn't there a rumor or something about either Aeromexico or Mexicana (Sorry my memory has failed me) starting service to Seattle? What I am suprised at, is that JAL choose YVR over Seattle.

a looooooooooooooooooooooong time from now if ever, particularly considering most USA carriers don't have the amount of PRC frequencies they desire from their primary hubs/gateways, let alone a tertiary gateway along the likes of SEA.

I don't think it will be that long. But you're correct, it won't happen until after the major hubs are covered, and there are still several left. But after 2010-2012 when that is likely to reach PRC frequency saturation, then SEA and BOS will get their shot.

Isn't Seattle one of the few cities to have SK service? Even SFO doesn't have that. SFO also lost their Finnair flights a long time ago

Yes, SEA still has daily SK non-stops to CPH. SFO no longer has any non-stops to Scandinavia.
