1980's Flight Video Question

Tue Feb 20, 2007 1:47 pm

Hi All,

I have an awkward question. I just viewed this video on YouTube.com and the person who posted it says it is from February of 1985. But I tend to think it is later than that.

It is a video about this man's Florida vacation and the first several minutes show a place at the gate, taking off, and landing. It is a US Air flight from Washington DC to Fort Lauderdale as seen by the take off scenery and the pilots wlecome to FLL PA.

That is where my first flag comes up.... According to my 1985 OAG's and the route maps on DepartedFlights.com US Air did not operate the Washington to FLL service much later when they made DC a focus city.

Link to 1985 Route Map:

http://www.departedflights.com/US110185.html

Link to first Route Map with Washington to FLL service from 1989:

http://www.departedflights.com/US100189.html

I know that smoking was still allowed on the flight as evident by the FA's PA before landing, but that could have been as late as Feb. 1990 since the no-smoking ban did not go into effect until the end of that month and prior to that date you could smoke only on flights 2 hours or greater (After 1988 law). This flight in the OAG is clearly over 2 hours. So the video could be from later.

Also, the Flight Attendant Uniforms, they are a modern navy blue. If I recall their uniforms were brown or tan in 1985. So abother reason the date seems off to me.

Please look at it and tell me what you think.

Thanks for your help on this stupid question that seems to be eating at me.

That's 85 alright. I can just tell by the cars, what's on the radio, etc. Kinda one of those things you had to live through (I'm guessing you may have been in diapers at the time?) Great freaking link though, brings me back to being a kid. By the way, we'll see you in the Big East tourney...you guys got a solid team this year.

Hard to say for sure, but if it's not 1985 then he went through a lot of trouble piecing together the video. All the songs are pre-1985, the TV ads were for reruns of shows that ended before 1983, the newest car I saw was the 1985 model Chevy Cavalier and 1984 Camaro. The Pentagon proves the flight was before 1989, the old bus lines that ran underneath the building were closed in 1988 but are clearly visible in the takeoff.

The only thing that really bugs me is the audio. The quality is too good. Sure, this might be on 8mm film, but still...he must have done some serious audio editing to make that video come out as good as it did.

I might suggest that the flight connected through PIT. Nothing says the flight was non-stop. No Captain's voice on the first flight to compare.

Edit: Regarding the window shots, I guess he either booked the same seat on both flights (now who would do that?  scratchchin  ) or it was a continuing flight.

The other possibility is that it was a seasonal/promotional route that did not make the 1985 route map because it was not in effect in August, when the route map was printed.

The vette that poped up was between and 84-89 then i saw one short dog caddy they came out in what 86??? so depending on the time of year it could have been late 85.. I noticed a pan-am 727 on take off but man those easterns looked good when he landed didnt they...like brand new..

It could very well have been 85 no later than 87 but gee did you see the other videos of the trip.. like pulling over and watching people... the elementary school was odd..

The Seville Elegante came out in 1980.

edit: I was also surprised to see a Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon, those first came out in 1984 in limited numbers. First car I ever drove...

I liked seeing the 727s again...Brings back memories of sitting on the DC waterfront watching them line in one after another. Nice shot of the thrust-reversers too!

Kind of neat to see DCA back in the 80s. The other videos bring me back to my childhood.
I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

The ninth generation deVille, 85-88. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Cadillac-Sedan-de-Ville.jpg
Since we're talking Cadillac, I noticed several Cimmaron on the road...I don't know about Florida, but in Virginia people hated those, by 1985 the early models were being traded in for just about anything else. The other thing I saw that was even more curious was the FWD Fleetwood Brougham, which just hit the streets in late '84. But the biggest teller was that there were no Ford Taurus, or they were carefully avoided by the camera. Those made a big entrance in December 1985, by Feb. '86 or '87 you could be sure one would have popped up.

That image of the DCA terminal is a nice comparison for the "historic" terminal of today. Did you see the big GA field just after liftoff? Now that's bringing back some memories! TWA was at the DCA terminal then too...Yes, Pan Am was there, but I only watched for their 747s at Dulles . Only chance to fly PA was from LAX to I think either DEN or PHX in 1975 or '76. I slept the whole trip...I still believe my mom slipped rum into my apple juice. But I flew TWA several times to see my dad in Missouri, joined their "FF" program when I was 12. Loved STL, hated EWR. (I can't remember why, I just did...probably had to do with how busy the gate agents were and the FA that gave me extra snacks when I transferred in STL...)

Wow, this is really interesting.

I agree, it could have been 1985.

But after some of you sugested that it could have been a one-stop, I looked that up as well in my Jan. '85 OAG as well as my Dec. '85 OAG and the one-stop service still did not esist from DC to FLL. That is what is bugging me here.

And the uniforms, they seem to be from the late 80's.

But who really knows, this will probably always remain a slight mystery.

This sure brings back good memories!
I went up and down those streets myself in Nov 87, and everything looks the same. Had a memorable flight from EWR into MIA on a CO DC10. It was almost empty for some reason and we were being tossed around by that warm and humid Florida air. Great stuff!  Big grin

Anyone have a US Air Timetable from Feb. 1985 that could see if a flight existed from Washington DC to FLL (even as a one-stop)?

I wonder if the guy shot this with Beta or VHS. The videocameras back then were huge and one had to have a large battery pack slung around the neck when going mobile with it.

Haven't watched "Back to the Future", have ya? JVC had consumer camcorders on the market in 1985...  Wink They are huge by today's standards, though.

Oooops totally forgot about that.
A friend of mine had a Beta cam back in '85 and it was heavy and bulky. You also had to lug around a large battery pack that was the size of a purse. My friends and I were envious because he had a video cam.
