L10's Coming To LAS!

Tue Feb 20, 2007 3:13 pm

Although I cannot elaborate for fear of my life, there is word about the airport that 2x L15's will be based at LAS in the very near future. The a/c have been purchased fom the Middle East by a casino mogul for VIP flying to and from LAS and Macau. Th a/c are currently going through overhaul in preparation for the operation. Details to follow shortly!

Fear of your life? Over an aviation rumor?

I know Steve Wynn is building a casino in Macau - in fact, my cousin's husband is project manager for it. Not sure why Wynn would need 2 L-1011s for service between Vegas and Macau, but he's got a little more money than me, so I guess he can do what he wants.

LAS-MFM is 7319nm great circle. Can a L1011 make that distance? Lots of extra fuel tanks I guess.

On the eastbound, Sheldon's 76 can make LAS nonstop, but I doubt it on the L15. Because these are VIP a/c with lower pax counts, the nonstop will probably be based on weather conditions meaning that westbound winter nonstops would not work and summer being very questionable. I believe on the eastbound, they can make it pretty much year-round.

I've met my share of VIPs in my time here, never once has anyone threated my life over a rumor. Besides, there isn't much that old blind fart Wynn can do secretly anymore. If he takes a piss, it's news.

Yea I'm thinking they're going to have to stop in Japan or something. It should be able to make 5500nm LAS-NRT considering its max fuel + few pax.

Who else qualifies as a "casino mogul rich enough to purchase 2 L-1011s for VIP travel between LAS and MFM?" Can't be a very long list, no?

Perhaps you are referring to the two ex-Saudia Royal Flight L-1011-500's that were purchased by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation? They are s/n 293A-1249 and 193G-1250, the last two L-1011's built, and both had previously been converted to VIP configuration. Their previous registrations were HZ-HM5 and HZ-HM6, they are now registered N388LS and N389LS.

I take it neither of you has ever been on board an L-1011 in VIP configuration. They are every bit as luxurious as any 742, including AF1. Additionally, these two aircarft are very low hour and cycle, since both have been in VIP configuration since new.

I doubt it. I see the HF antennias have been removed from HM5, I heard the Comm center had been removed and while the ECM appears to be installed I would doubt that its is still opernational.

N388LS should be over at SAT now. Apparently flew over on 13FEB OERK-SNN-SAT.
No sign yet of N389LS (haven't been tracking this one to be honest).

According to the FAA N-number database, N388LS does belong to the Las Vegas Sands Corporation but is already used on a Lear 35. Also according to the same database, N389LS has been reserved by the Sands. Are they moving a N-number away from the Lear?

No, N388LS is available and also reserved by Las Vegas Sands Corp. It was deregistered from the Lear 35A owned by AIRLAND L L C in 1998 and therefore was available to be reserved after that date.

Quoting MCOflyer (Reply 22):

It is already extremely difficult to operate an L-1011 from an engine and parts perspective and with a reasonably active schedule in an FAR 121 operation. Spare parts, engines, and vendors that will even touch anything related to the L-1011 are scarce, becoming so, or simply do not exist anymore. The reason being is that there are no major operators left and thus, no market (i.e. profit potential) for support of them any longer.

However, since these are very low hours/cycles aircraft, will probably see very little activity (a few flights a week perhaps), and may not be operated in 121 ops, it would be possible to keep them going for many more years. A smart thing to do may be to work out some type of a deal with Marshall Aerospace in Great Britian who is supporting the RAF's 9 L15 tankers since these are to remain operational for at least another 5 years.

I love the aircraft, but am a realist when it comes to operating it in any regularity in this day and age. We (TZ) are set to retire our remaining four by the end of this year  cry  It will be interesting to watch the operation of these VIP aircraft.

Like most tris and quads, they handle it well. They have more energy available after an engine out so the legal weight limits are higher.

Crownvic,

Just in case you haven't seen it N388LS L-1011-500 s/n 293A-1249 arrived McCarran direct from Shannon. Its the first of two L-1011-500 VIP aircraft bought by Sheldon Adelsen, the casino mogul.

So where are they stashing it ? I don't think LAS has a hangar for a heavy,do they ? Wonder where they're gonna find crews current on L10's ? I meen, who still flies L1011's in the US anymore anyway? i never realized there was that much of a market to fly in a handful of high rollers from Macau (right?) to LAS,I know gambling is king, but you'de think if you're that much of a high-roller,you'de have your own jet. Just my  twocents

Also,is it still in SV colors? Anyone got pix ?

Most million dollar players are flown compliments of the casino on a chartered jet. Some even fly commerical - I saw a few million dollar level players fly Southwest - and are you ready for this - OMG -- Allegiant. (when I worked in the tourism industry in LAS). Yes, Allegiant. I did a double take when I saw the limo dispatch for that guy. Sure enough, he was on Allegiant. And he deposited $3.2 MILLION that weekend on the 21 table. And the guys on SWA - I ain't talking hops from SoCal; they were on transcons/midcons.

Few fly in on their own plane.

Southeast Asia is a HUGE gaming market - nearly every large property has an Asian Marketing Department - even MGM has an office in Bejing. Perhaps Sheldon needs the L10s to ferry high level players across the Pacific.
