Discovery Wings (UK) To Be Axed

Wed Feb 21, 2007 4:37 am

First in the US and now here - Discovery Wings is to be axed from 1st March.

It will be replaced by "Discovery Turbo" - a motoring channel aimed at adult men.

The channel will "be offering programs featuring the most exciting new vehicles including cars, trucks, motorbike, planes and trains".

I for one think this is a bad decision - unlike the states there is a huge selection of civil aviation programmes on Wings from hang gliders to 747s.

Well it was going to happen sooner or later, the other day Discovery wings had three programmes repeating throughout the night - one of them was about trains....

I havent watched the channel in earnest in a few years, its been going downhill for ages. For example, tonights schedule -

Mark Williams on the Rails (30mins) x 2 - trains? TRAINS?!
Skybound (30mins) x 2 - Repeat
Aviation Archive Weekend - Repeat

Out of three hours, two of them have been on in the past 2 months, and one of them has nothing at all to do with the channels theme.

Frankly as a " TRansport" Enthusiast I think this is a good idea. The Air bit was becoming a bit like a repeat station from the Galaxy. Lets have trains boats planes and buses then you can pick and choose at our leisure by using freeze and play

Discovery Wings UK = AirHog Day.

Bound to happen, too little content and poor ad revenue.

The only good thing on the channel was Flight Deck, and the same episodes are repeated three times a night

Glad its gone wasting my sky capacity

It could have been much better, but there we go. Goodbye Wings.
Can;t say i really watched it, I mean, National geographic normally has an aviation related program on it sometime during the day. Fine, its always a disaster, but always good watching.

I'm not too bothered, Discover Wings is all about endless repeats and cheap programming. National Geographic is far better with quality documentaries about various topics ranging from aviation to geology etc.

Yup Load of Rubbish, The only good programs I found on there recently were the repeats of the A380 program off the Discovery Channel, because every program seems to start and finish in a differant place compared to the previous broadcast, so I kept thinking I was missing bits.

I can think three good programmes on Discovery Wings:

1. Flying Heavy Metal
2. The making of the A380 documentary - Would love to see a similar one on the 787!
3. Flight Deck

....But you can only watch them repeated so many times.

Completely agree with you.
Flight Deck had some really good episodes but once you've watched it 27 times you just cant be @rsed watching it anymore,  Wink
