WN Flight - PHX To PHX?

Wed Feb 21, 2007 10:39 pm

I saw on the boards at Sky Harbor this morning (2/21), that WN flight #8751 is a scheduled 7:00am departure from PHX to PHX? Can anyone shed some light on this flight?

Then, why would it be posted on the boards if it won't be carrying any passengers? Just curious.

ASD-based flight trackers don't show flights based on their being passenger-carrying or not--they just show flights, period.

Likely because, in one way or another, whatever combined dispatch/scheduling/res software suite WN uses, automatically feeds the Flight Information Displays.

Not exactly...

Whenever we (or any other airline) files an IFR flight plan with ATC, that info is what gets into the ASD system. (This is why you also see the route of flight). The airline's scheduling and/or rez systems are not involved with what one sees on ASD. The on-airport FIDS/monitor dispalys are another matter. I'd bet you that SWA8751 is not showing up on the arrival/departure monitors inside the terminal at PHX....

OPNL...the OP is referring to the "boards" or FIDs at PHX Sky Harbor.
(I'm aware of the beauty of how the ASD gets its info.)

It happens...I don't know what software WN uses, but those who use information feeds from SABRE products like FTPlot/FTWeb and the such to feed FIDs have been known to show anything that originates out of certain airport.

If there's a test flight with an origination out of the PHX and coming right back to PHX, it will likely show up on on both the departure and arrival boards...just with no gate information. It's an IT function to keep those from showing...it's just not worth the hassle.

What are we betting?

Shiner Bock it is...Man, I miss home.

Obviously I can't see the FID screen at PHX from my little corner of the world...but if you pump the info into Southwest.com you get this.

Quote:

Flight Status Information

Arrival Date: Wednesday, February 21, 2007
Flight Number: 8751
Departure Phoenix (PHX) 07:00 AM 10:00 AM Delayed N/A
Arrival Phoenix (PHX) 07:50 AM 10:50 AM Delayed N/A

Interestingly enough, we maybe have just unintentionally uncovered a fatal flaw in the PHX flight information system. WN lists scheduled departure time as 0700 local, however PHX says it is scheduled for 0709 local.

I appears they get the info from the FAA...which doesn't list gate departure time, but actual wheels up time. Could be bad for any average pax that doesn't understand the difference.

Yes, it was posted on the departure monitors at the airport and was "delayed" until 10:00am...I did not look at the arrival monitors.

Roger that.. Looks like they canceled it as SWA8751 and ran it as SWA8750, in the air now...

There have been instances of flights listed at Hartsfield, leaving from "Gate DN" ... they were Delta test flights leaving from Delta North (the old MX hangar), that somehow didn't get editted out of the public screens ...

Hartsfield also has the infamous Gate XLD ... ie: cancelled ...

Someone tell me if this is a stupid question. But since it's not a revenue flight, why are they using SWA as a callsign and not N*****? Just curious.

We release all our Part 91 ops just like they are Part 121 ops... It's mostly a contractual issue...

With who? Pilots? I'm not sure why that would be a contractual issue for anyone.

The flight showing on the FIDS board is not a glitch or flaw of any kind. We have the ablity to show any flight on the internal (or employee only) screens or show the flight on both the internal and Public screens. All it takes is one check mark in a box on a computer to change that.

After the fender bender in SAN back in December, one of the aircraft did a test flight around SAN after being repaired. It showed on our FIDS.

Yeah Ops left the internal only box unchecked on that one. Same thing as PHX
