UA "Deal": Upgrade Y From ORD-DCA For $1300!

Thu Feb 22, 2007 12:05 am

Funny/sad (in my view) end to an on-line reservation experience at United. I bought a R/T ticket between ORD and DCA for next week for $369.00. Just before I clicked the ""purchase ticket" button the following text appeared on the screen:

"Congratulations! You have been selected to receive a special, limited-time offer to purchase a seat in the next available class of service. This special offer is only good for your current itinerary and may not be available at a later date. You can purchase this special offer now or decline the offer and keep your original itinerary and pricing.

"The flights indicated below may be upgraded from Economy Class to First Class at a special discounted rate.

"This offer will expire in 5 minutes.

"Your original itinerary will be purchased if you do not Accept or Decline the offer.

"Current itinerary total:
USD 369.80
Segment Date Airports Premium Class fee
1. Mon, Feb 26, 2007 ORD - DCA
USD 644.50
2. Tue, Feb 27, 2007 DCA - ORD
USD 644.50

"Itinerary total including premium class fee for eligible flight segments indicated in the list above: USD 1,658.80"

This really caught me off-guard. Occasionally United on-line or kiosk check-in will offer me an upgrade for $50 or $100, and of course on longer flights I would just use miles/credits to upgrade. But not this time - for a mere $1300 I can upgrade on the spot! Wonder how many takers United gets for this nonsense.

Considering that's less than half of what the full F class fare is, I don't see what you're complaining about. If you don't want it, click decline...

Also, it is not like someone at UA said "let's offer him this" it's a equation in a computer system. Sometimes the data that goes into the equation makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. My wife was offered an upgrade (to Economy Plus) from PIT-ORD the other day for only $14. Can't beat that!

Doesn't sound like a bad deal if they're offering you first class for less than half the normal price. Either you want to pay for a first class ticket...Or you don't. Is first class on ORD-DCA worth $1,300??? Probably not. But either you wanna buy it...or you don't.  Smile

Just to make sure we're all clear, you were being offered an upgrade from economy to first class yes?

I believe the $50/$100 upgrade offer you spoke of is an upgrade from economy to economy plus.

Needless to say, there's a HUGE difference between economy plus and first class in United.

I agree - that's a lot of money for a fairly short flight such as that...even at a discount, first can be expensive. I wonder what percent of F class really pays for it...

{raises hand}

Of course, I fly a tenth I used to, so it's still cheaper to fly paid F then all the flying I used to do to earn elite status and free upgrades.

As to the fare itself, ORD-DCA is a "Business1" routing which has significant corporate travel. Since many corporations have contracts with UA that discounts the price they pay for unrestricted tickets, UA probably jacks the F and Y fare bases up significantly to account for that.

I fly DTW-STL all the time on NW and when I book in K class I am offered upgrading to F in exchange for $200 and 20,000 miles. That is a bad deal. Many times on that route F is only about $200 more than K anyway and I get to keep my miles.

I've been offered an upgrade from Y to F on this same route for $100 to $150 on numerous occasions, and never more than $150. I would be a little shocked to see $1300 pop up, personally.

Which sounds about right. UA sells packs of four 500-mile upgrade certificates for $300 to non-elites and $200 to UA elites. The "buy-up offer" UA is pushing is $65 per 500 miles (or $260 for four).

Agreed. That sounds more like an "x-UP" fare that has an Economy Class fare basis and a First Class booking code.

Needless to say, there's a HUGE difference between economy plus and first class in United.

There's a number of carriers that offer this.. It's usually a set amount per set number of miles.. though I've seen it done at check-in.

There is a huge difference in most Y classes vs. F classes. (Yes, I've flown UA in F and Y). Is it worth it to pay $1300 ahead of time for a 2 hour flight? Personally I'd say no, as I'm sure most people would. Perhaps it's there for those flying on an expense account that think they can bill it back. (Good for a lot of lawyers, bad for every company I've ever worked for).

The $50/$100 upgrades I've seen are for day of departure at the airport. Those, I've gone for on numerous occasions.

And people wonder why companies insist on using travel management companies...  Wink

$1600 sounds about right. I always look up how much the F fare is before I look at Y to see how much the fare is. It is always in that range.

I always do that too. I like to know how much stuff costs. I think it keeps things in perspective. Comparing prices makes a good consumer.
