YYZ Thunder Snow Thread

Thu Feb 22, 2007 11:06 pm

We got smacked with a huge Thunder Snow storm this morning, including lots of power outages. Any effect on ops out of YYZ/YHM? Thinking also of YUL when the storm gets there. Listining on my scanner it seems that the YTO ATC were pretty busy.

anything worth noting?

For YYZ, nothing really special this morning, except a few holdings and extra spacing due to snow removal and Runway 15 ops for a while. Maybe a 15 to 30 minutes delay only. ATC was a bit busy but was still smooth in a general sense. Good work for them.

YYZ has its own power plant, so it is "off the grid" in that sense although it can supply power to the grid or draw from it in emergencies.

I think you are wildly exaggerating this so called "storm". I live in Etobicoke, south east of YYZ, and I heard one clap of thunder, and we got about half an inch of snow which is rapidly melting.

Yeah...the thunder and lightning passed off as quickly as it came.....there was quite a bit of snow, but nowhere close to the storm we had a week back..... smile

I guess I was a little hard on YYZatchboy. I must live in a part of the city that got off lightly. However I still think calling it a "Huge" storm was a bit over the top. Smile

Back in December SEA got the 1st of 2 big snow events. Big deal for SEA which sees 1 or 2 flakes a year.

More interesting was the thunder snow storms that rolled in with this snow. It was the night of the Green Bay vs. Seattle Monday night football game.

Non-the-less,.....BA #49 or 48 was hit by lighting landing at SEA during this storm.

Half a mile from the airport got 6inches of snow in about a 3 hour time frame.

Don't forget, whenever Toronto's daily snowfall amount exceeds 1 cm, the Canadian army is put on high-alert standby to take care of the matter with the most technologically-advanced shovels money can buy, jk.  Wink

Didn't want to start a new thread for every storm, but there's a really baaaaaaad snowstorm raging outside right now...never seen it so bad.....I am in downtown Toronto and I can hardly see the buildings across the road from our building...this is certainly going to hit the traffic at YYZ today.....expect a lot of delays and cancellations....  Sad

I'm only a couple of blocks west of YYZ and the snow is coming down quite hard, visibility is low, road coverage is a few inches already and it only started at 1300hrs.

Looks like I will have to go on a polar bear watch before stepping outside to clean my car. Those pesky furry beasts!

A lot of freezing rain forecast for the evening....how does that affect planes landing or taking off...? I know how bad it is walking in those conditions..... Big grin

Oh come on...there hasn't been a mature polar bear sighting in Mississauga for at least a month! Not since the fur seals left anyway. The real concern near YYZ are the penguin strikes after rotation or on short final.

Most offices in downtown are knocking off early....heard that the GO Trains are in a mess......I'm sure that airport must be close to shutting down, if not down already.....

Apparently a CN train derailed east of Toronto, but the weather is screwing all the routes.

It's not too bad now, earlier this afternoon the radar was all red and it was quite a bit busier than usual when I passed through Ottawa - I'm almost certain I heard some diversions from Toronto.

Seems the storm is weakening as it drifts east, but Montreal will get it's share of junk tomorrow - looking forward to a fun day at work (YUL) tomorrow.

My uncle is passing through YYZ and he called to say he might have to sleep here tonight. Nothing much is moving because there is too much Ice on the ground.

Ya, was just watching the news, apparently arrivals only at YYZ right now.

Here near YHM it's... well... it can't make up it's mind.. a mix of rain/freezing rain off and on. The snow weighed a ton when I shoveled it and I was drenched. Nice ice build up on the trees though.
I don't care what you think of my opinion. It's my opinion, so have a nice day :)

According to Live ATC, (never heard it so quiet at this time) snow removal just done on 6R and an inspection is underway. Friendly banter between the Tower and Aircraft on the ramp. Must be nuts for center. going to switch over and see how bad it is.

We had about 10 YYZ diversions at YOW yesterday, including an AC 343 from PEK. WS repo'd 3 diversions out of YOW last night (wise idea given the ice pellets and poor visibility we now have). Jazz repo'd 2 aircraft to YUL last night. Most of what has left YOW this morning has been headed to sun spots. The 343 is doing a Rapidair run...something that's happened here more in the past 2 weeks than has ever happened in the past 2 years.

Yeah, it was a mess in YYZ last night (Thursday March 1). I got caught in a major delay. Not as bad as JFK with JetBlue was a few weeks ago, of course.

I was on AC137, the YYZ to YVR flight that was supposed to depart at 18:00. First of all getting to Pearson was hard enough with no taxi companies answering their phones when I tried to get a cab. Traffic on the highway and side roads was moving about 30 km/h, or so it felt. I managed anyway, but then there was a creeping delay of the departure time for several hours. Tons of cancellations were showing on the boards. The steady snow turned to freezing rain by 2100 or so.

We finally boarded at 22:15 and pushed back about 30 minutes later. A major coup was that the 333 scheduled was replaced by the 345. AVOD, woohoo! Just as we got to the de-icing pad, the captain said the friction level of "the" runway was below minimums for this aircraft type so we ended up sitting there on the de-icing pad for 2 hours. Several announcements later, we had a solid 30 minute de-icing and took off at 1:35. Captain also said several aircraft either taxied back to the gate for more fuel or were towed back. He seem to brag that he shut down the engines immediately upon reaching the pad so 'we were in good shape when the weather clears'. Apparently they gave up trying to brush whichever runway they had in use before midnight, and switched to another one. At one point he said the airport authority didn't was him to return to the terminal because it was full of people and there were no gates available. Nearly three hours on the tarmac sucks, though.

Fast flight to YVR: only 4 hours, 6 minutes westbound, arrived at 2:40 ~ 2:45 local. Got to sleep at 4am local, that's 7am in Toronto. So much for a good night's sleep!
