New Continental 777-200 Out Of Factory

Fri Feb 23, 2007 4:54 am

I'm surprised know one else has posted this.

One of the two new 777-200s destined for Continental has been rolled out of the factory.

But that doesn't mean that nobody noticed it  Wink Ln 617 rolled out about two weeks ago, and sat at the flight line for some days before it went into the paint hangar. You can see a picture showing its tail here:

Thanks to Matt Cawby for the pictures  Smile
The next one, Ln 625 should be out in a couple of weeks.

The charity auction to fly on the delivery flight got ZERO bids, basically because the March Of Dimes set the opening bid too high. $10,000 is just too much to ask as an opening bid. Also, I thought at first it was for 2 people, but it turned out to be for one person, from what I could see. I emailed to clarify, and they didn't respond. I would have bid $5k, and maybe if things got rolling, they could have reached above $10k anyway (not from me, but from someone).

These new ones will have the F/A bunks above the cabin for rest periods. I wonder which scheduled route will be its inaugural flight.

$10,000 is someone smoking some funny stuff? When UA rolled out the 777 back in 1995 they were offered a special fund raising flight out of DEN for $250. I don't think inflation has been that bad.

What is amazing about the photos is that they show no less than 7 777s parked! Plus the 747 parked down the way. A widebody lover's paradise!

Just in case you don't see the 7th 777, you can just barely see the tail of a 2d Singapore 777 peeking out from behind the Continental 777.

Now that is one busy tarmac.

For $10K I want to log some time behind the controls, maybe do a few lazy-8s.

The "prize" was an F ticket to either IAH or EWR, then an F ticket from IAH or EWR to SEA, then a car transfer to a hotel, a night in the hotel, a dinner with Boeing and CO execs and guests, a VIP tour of the factory, a BF seat on the 777 as it is delivered to EWR or IAH, sitting near Gordon and some Boeing execs, and then an F ticket back to your city of origin. So it's more than a flight. I could see that being worth $5k for an enthusiast who wants to help a charity, and then bidding might go up.

But still, starting at $10k was a mistake. Had they never run an auction before? I thought all charities participated in auctions and knew how to work them...

It flew at an altitude of six feet for a distance of four and a half feet. Then we discovered rain makes it catch fire.

And there should be some more jets (77Ws) outside the paint hangar. Think about how that flight line will look before the first 787 is delivered (Boeing will produce ~20 787s, if not more, that will be ready for delivery when the 787 is certified!)

Hell -- when you put it that way, and for charity even I might have been willing to part with $5k -- maybe even $7500 if I you get to keep the OnePass miles (for the scheduled flights, at least).

I don't remember seeing/hearing/reading anything about an auction, anyway, so...

Unpainted ones? The grey ones to the right? If its those two you're thinking about: that's a KC767s for ITAF and probably the 762 that was built as a demonstrator for the KC767 for the USAF.

For those curious, the new 777s (ships 19 and 20) will have 50 seats in Business/First (235 in Y/C still), AVOD and crew bunks (as noted before).

All other 777s will be retrofitted about every 45-50 days.

Just above the unpainted 767's is what looks to be an old Convair twin prop. Why would one of those be there?

That is used by Honeywell as a flying avionics testbed... IIRC, it is a CV580. I believe a certian a.netter works for them up here, so that person might be able to provide more information.

PAE has a lot of aircraft service, maintenance and overhaul facilities unrelated to Boeing. That photo was taken with a powerful telephoto lens so that Convair is a long way from the Boeing facilities. Also note the 727 visible in the distance to the right of the AI 777 tail.

There's a 1970 aerial photo of the Boeing Everett ramp with about 25 parked 747s, many without engines, due to the serious early P&W JT9D problems that plagued the 747's first year or so of service.

And don't forget the aircraft that are in the paint hangars. There are usually at least 2 being painted at a time - those hangars are always in use. The Air Canada 777, for example, is in the far paint hangar.
That's why we're here.

Right now SQ has the largest 777 fleet. But if you also add outstanding (firm) orders to that, EK has them beat. So EK will have the largest 777 fleet eventually, barring early retirement of other 777's of course.

Makes me laugh how you are wrong. It isn't the most read thread by any means, and I've see threads re: other companies and their new jet rolling out get way more hits.

As for why it's news, even though CO is one of the largest airlines out there in terms of pax flown and destinations, they don't get new widebodies that often.

Continental ordered these twin 777 when they introduced servcie to Peking and Dehli a couple years back. They will start life across the pond, most likely, and then go to farther and newer corners of Cal's growing route map. Newark to South Africa would be nice, more Asian destinations seem more elikely though.

Well stated, Ikramerica... Continental is definitely a "comeback kid" if you ask me. From bankruptcy to the brink of ruin (even relegated to "low cost carrier" status) they've really come back strong and keep winning awards for service etc. They also have a relatively young aircraft fleet. They're one of the success stories for sure.
