Northwest Pilots Sue Northwest

Sat Feb 24, 2007 3:02 pm

There is something about this particular complaint that gets on my nerves. I'm socialist, salaried and all for unionization but to sue over the way a $1000 - $2000 bonus check for profit sharing is paid out is ridiculous.

Pilots sue Northwest, alleging bonus changes

Northwest Airlines' pilots union has sued the bankrupt carrier, alleging that it changed terms of bonus pay programs without consent.
The U.S. Railway Labor Act governing airline-union relations bars unilateral changes to working conditions, Northwest's chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association said in a filing in the airline's bankruptcy case. The union told pilots in a message Friday that it wants Northwest to undo the changes.

Filing a lawsuit moves the union beyond the typical setting for a work-rules dispute, which labor groups usually contest in a grievance process. The union also objected to Northwest's creation of employee groups to improve labor relations at the Eagan, Minnesota-based carrier.

"We are disappointed that the Air Line Pilots Association is opposing the company's efforts to enable our pilots to share in the airline's success and to be recognized and rewarded for providing great customer service," Northwest said in an e-mailed statement Friday.

Northwest, the fifth-largest U.S. airline, is working to leave bankruptcy protection next quarter.

Its not about being greedy or petty or anything like that. It is about a contract being in place and a party not honoring it. Trust me, if it were the other way around you can be sure that Northwest would sue.

I agree, this is about the contract, but why the world would you ever believe management would not want flexibility in paying bonuses? It would not surprise me if any movement in favor of the pilots limited the benefits received by other work groups. Northwest will have to cut somewhere, right? It is incredible that that one work group receives far more pay than the others, who have had to sell their homes to make ends meet and now must rent small apartments. My sympathy ends at the end of the old property lines those people used to own.

If its profit sharing, shouldn't the pilots have to pay the airline?  duck

That article is pretty vague. It's got zero details. But ALPAs responsibility is to act for the benifit of their pilots, and no other employee. If that means taking a bonus from other employees, well, that's the unions job; to make sure the employees they represent are treated the way they should be.

I was about to ask if this is the beginning of the end for Northwest Airlines. I guess in regards to what the lawsuit is over, perhaps it doesn't seem so. I did wonder this just now, and I assume it was discussed before. (Pardon me, as I really don't get into too many NW threads, nor do I know much about NWA), but what would happen if NW were to go, God forbid, belly up? What would happen to Pinnacle and Meseba? Would they be sold off er broken up, er what?
