One of them has got to be DayJet's order of Eclipse 500s... the ordered 239 of them at once.

I'm going to guess the largest in both number and dollar values is probably military. The B-2 and F-22 come to mind.

It could be US Airways initial order for airbus a/c.

On November 6, 1996, just following the re-branding to US Airways, US Airways placed an order for up to 400 Airbus A320-series narrowbody aircraft, with 120 firm orders at the time of the order signing. At the time, it was regarded as the largest single aircraft order in history. In 1998, the airline followed with an order for up to 30 Airbus A330-series or A340-series widebody aircraft, with an initial firm order for 7 A330-300 aircraft.

Don't know if that order has been exceed in terms of a/c or $$ by a subsequent order by another source. However, due to the situation post 9/11, much of the US Airways order has been unfilled, postponed or cancelled.

Additionally, several of the a/c delivered from that initial order have been turned back in to the leasing companies as a result of restructuring associated with multiple bankruptcies.

In terms of dollars, I'd have to second the B-2A, by a large margin probably. As for number of aircraft, I couldn't tell you. The F-16 has always been a hot seller.

What about sticking to just commercial aircraft? I'd say US's order for the A320 would be the largest.

However, I think when the 737RS is about to be lauched, WN will place an order exceeding US's.

Sure, I'd be happy to. However, the OP didn't state commercial aircraft, they just said "aiplane" and the B-2 and F-16 are airplanes, last time I checked anyway.  Silly

Air India's recent order of 68 boeing aircraft will easily be one of the largest in terms of value---
15---77Ws
27---787-800s
18---737-800

The order was estimated to be valued at about 11 Billion USD.

I dont think there has been an order excess of that in terms of value

I'd say that if QF execises their 787 options that'd go a long way to some kind of record.

given that WN NEEDS a couple of frames a month for decades to come just for replacement..... Its certain that WN would order anything upto 1000 firm+options to make sure they get all the slots they need over those years for replacements and planned growth.

Didn't B6 order 100 A320s?

China ordering 60 firm 787s was big too, even if they were broken down into multiple airlines.

NH and JL orders for 787s were large.

Problem with "china" orders is that they are not real orders until the specific airline orders it out of the pool of avalible aircraft. So at best they are "options" until the individual airline picks them up. Also given that best people can tell the first exchange of money for the frames happens at this time, I would say that "purchace right" is closer to the correct term for what the initial contract from China to Boeing/Airbus.

of course with only 21 frames, the price per frame is high given the fixed development costs. The real shame is that they could have had a whole hell of alot more frames for not that much more money since they pulled the plug at Basicly the worst point possible. Enough frames to require heavy capital investment in a "line" but too few to actually spread the costs out much.

Then again 21 is enough to scare anyone sane enough to assume the B2 does what they say it does, and 100 is not much more useful against those too stupid to care.

I was thinking by Dollar value -not by the number of aircraft ordered- the Pan Am 747 order might be the largest aircraft order ever. Back in 1966 an order for 25 747s that had to be an awful ot of cash and the order nearly made Pan Am bankrupt.
Number of aircraft I think it has to be AA for MD 80s.

I did not say that was not expensive. (50) firm 787's is indeed large but not close to the largest in numbers.

Found this:
On April 26, 2004, the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) became the launch customer for the 787, then still-known as the 7E7, announcing a firm order for 50 aircraft to be delivered beginning in 2008. The order is valued at roughly $6 billion and represents the largest ever single launch order for a new Boeing jetliner.

I think the US DoD ordering 600 Boeing kc-707s in the mid/late fifties for delivery in 4-5 years is still unprecedented.

RE: What Was The Single Largest Airplane Order?

Quoting Oldeuropean (Reply 30):
That was the first thing that came to my mind, when I read the topic. They have had hundreds of them.

Anybody here, who knows something about SU and their orders in the 60th?

The exact numbers are difficult to come by, partly because of Russian secrecy and partly because being communist and all operations being nationalised, Aeroflot just tended to have a stream or aircraft which they bought from various manufacturers which were fed into the fleet as required, more an understanding of the intention to buy something between generals (The head of Aeroflot was normally a General and the entire fleet was still considered to be at the disposal of the army for troop transport if needed) without major orders being announced all of the time.

But to start with there was a number of very early orders in the mid to late 1930's for Russian built aircraft, as a result of the government's decree in 1935 which ordered that only Soviet built aircraft could be used for air services, although there was an exception for the DC-3's initially imported from the US, and the version which was produced under license as the Lisunov Li-2, it's believed that 6157 of which were built, although they never got around to paying Douglas for the licensing. The communist government had nationalised Aeroflot, or at least it's fore-runner Dobrolet amongst others in October of 1930, (before renaming it to Aeroflot on the 26th March 1932) so the pax and cargo Li-2's produced for Russia would have gone to them, probably hundreds, but then production shifted to combat variants for the WWII, although many of the survivors did then return to civilian service with Aeroflot after the war with most of the planes carrying Aeroflot titles, though exact order numbers are hard to pinpoint.

Similarly, once the An-2 finally got off the drawing board, thousands were incorporated into the Aeroflot fleet, then there was Aeroflot's first jet, the Tu-104 which I think received an initial order for 50 or so, but ultimately around 200 entered the fleet followed by the entry of 31 Tu-114's into service. They received some 750 Yak 40's, just to Aeroflot, and at least that number of Tu-154's, plus there were also large numbers of Il-18, Il-62, Yak-42, An-24, Tu-134 ordered, but as I stated at the beginning, I don't know the exact numbers involved, although considering Aeroflot usually ordered (or placed a requirement for) enough of an aircraft type to completely replace a previous model in their fleet, it would have been in the hundreds, such as when the 'order' was placed for the Il-86 which lead to around 100 examples joining the Aeroflot fleet. So, I don't doubt that the largest order or understanding to procure an aircraft will have come from Aeroflot, I just don't know exactly how much it was, if anyone could shed some light on it I'd be quite pleased. Must find out where I have put my books on soviet aircraft!

The largest civilian order for a while was the launch order for the L-1011, which IIRC, several carriers grouped together to order 50 at the start.

Doubtful... In 1990 UA placed a grand total of 23 firm a/c.

747-400 x7
777-200 x16

I'm not familiar with United's aircraft orders, I will check with who I can that would know. I know that there was a $22billion order, even Boeing takes note of it.

Quoting Piedmont767LGW (Reply 3):

It's a shame that all of this happened. Otherwise, they'd have plenty of aircraft for major international expansion out of PHL that they're doing now... 30 A330s? I wonder which options they were going with. It seems to me that the current A330s they're flying don't quite have the range to do anything beyond a PHL-ATH flight or anything of the type. I know that US is interested in Asia, considering they've just applied for Asia routes. The A340 would have definitely allowed them to do Asia flights, considering which options regarding engines and range they'd go with, but of course, US never ordered any. I don't think they fit their business model...

I wonder if US is, or was ever, interested in doing something like PHL-TLV or Cairo, or some other Middle Eastern flight, or is the Middle East not at all among their interests?

All in all, they did place a massive order for the A320 series aircraft. They still have about a hundred 737s in their fleet to start phasing out, but that can wait another 5 years or so. Did US ever retire their first 737-300, which I believe was one of the first 737-300s to take to the skies back in 1984/85? If not, it's only been flying for 22 years... Look at NW, they have 40-year-old DC9s...

However, I think when the 737RS is about to be lauched, WN will place an order exceeding US's.

I doubt it, see below:

Southwest Airlines U.S.A. North America 737-700 CF 20-Apr-2006 79

WN usually purchases aircraft in phases. Sure, it might be an order for 300 aircraft including options, but IMHO at most 100 will be firm, untill the aircraft has proven itself. That would be a wise businees decision IMHO at that's what WN is known for.

Source please? I cannot see 23 a/c costing UA 22billion... You say Boeing "notes it" then you must have a source, no?

Just not seeing it man... Mainly when EK can order 42 777's at 10billion list. UA would have to triple that order back in the early 90's to get to a price tag of 22 billion.

I had thought NWA's order for the A320 was the largest ever, and for NWA and Airbus, at the time it was done?

Also they placed a huge order for DC9 too did they not?

Sure, I'd be happy to. However, the OP didn't state commercial aircraft, they just said "aiplane" and the B-2 and F-16 are airplanes, last time I checked anyway.

Didn't B6 order 100 A320s?

They may have done an "up to" but they did order 100+100 E190s

Quoting Atrude777 (Reply 44):

No. In fact, almost all of the DC9s came from Republic in the merger or second hand

Multiple orders and many were taken in their deals for TWA and RenoAir. I actually wonder why AA didn't jump at the chance of the many newer build MD83s from AS.

"Today’s announcement means that easyJet now has 104 aircraft on firm order with Airbus, with a list price of over $4 billion, and holds purchase rights over a further 123 aircraft. The total size of easyJet’s order of Airbus aircraft (including options), first announced in October 2002, is 315. Of these, 88 have already been delivered."

" AirAsia Group's (Malaysia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia) total orders to 150 aircraft, plus 50 options and, in doing so, makes it one of Airbus' largest customers for the aircraft type."
