Dreamlifter 2: Why No Winglets?

Sun Feb 25, 2007 3:55 am

Just saw Dreamlifter 2 rolling out.
One question though: Where did her winglets go? As B-18271 she had winglets when CI sold her.
Thanks in advance.

They removed them.

Seriously, this thing has a hump the size of a pimple on a 14 year old boys face, its huge, winglets are the last thing on anyones mind when they consider the design of this - the efficiency savings winglets give are massively offset by the relatively small number of hours the Dreamlifter will do, and the inefficiency added by the cargo hump.

If I remember correctly, a lot of the Japanese airlines had the winglets removed from their 747s because the added weight wasnt offset enough because the planes did short haul work.

During test flights a vibration problem was found but Boeing solved the issue by removing the Dreamlifter's winglets and changing the way the fuel load is distributed. See: Analyst's 787 doubts burn Boeing
