Why IB Such Big Gap Between A321&A343?

Sun Feb 25, 2007 9:18 pm

As of next year IB will retire its MD 87, MD88, and 757. It will have an all airbus fleet of of A319, A320, A321, A343, A346 (pretty boring fleetif you ask me).

As you can see there is an extremely big gap between the A321 ans the A340-300. In my opinion they should get the A330.200. I'm sure they would be able to operate more profitably routes like Central american ones. Lets say flights to SAL, SAP or MGA and instead of having 3 weekly flights to PTY and GUA, they could have more frequencies. I find it weird they don't want to have any mid size aircraft!

Apparently they are said to wanting the 787 but IB ordering Boeing would be the world turned around

Then all the need is a 767 or A330.....or maybe they are holding out for a 787!

As long as they retire those MDs and I do not have to fly GVA-MAD on them anymore, I am cool with their fleet...

Yes, that would be really strange...

I can't sewe tyhis happeneing, I see IB being very loyal to Airbus. The a/c have done well for them, and it would be very cool to see an IB A350 Big grin

No, neither Iberia nor Audeli will get A332, EC-IYN and EC-IYB are going to Air Comet. Audeli was apparently interested in getting them but it won't happen.

Don't forget that Iberia has a code-share flight with Iberworld, who is operating with one of their A330-300s a 5 weekly Madrid-Cancún flight in an all-economy configuration. This flight is marketed using an Iberia flight number.

The A343s are for long haul and the A32S is for short haul.

For short haul frequency is more desirble as the market is more competitive and the flight times are shorter, so to increase capacity IB will send a lot of frequencies a day. For longer haul it's often only necessary to have one flight a day as people will often just write off a day for travel, as supposed to attempting to fit meetings and business events around a flight. IB probably has a monoply on a lot of it's south american routes so they can get away with this. Aslo long haul flights are often less densely configured, as confort matters more on longer flights. As a result IBs A321s have between 172-200 passengers, and their A343s have 260, so not a huge difference.

Only Iberia are cheap enough to codeshare with a charter airline !

that would be an A343 replacement

That's not true at all. Did you hear about of Avianca, Aeromexico, Air Comet (which will be stronger now Air Madrid is only a past) Aerolineas Argentinas, Air Europa, LAN, LAN-Ecuador, Santa Barbara Airlines, etc ..?

IB is a strong carrier to Latin America but it doesn't mean IB is the only one to fly Latin America.

CUN is mostly a leisure traffic in which the Business Class has not demand.

Anyway to fly MAD-CUN you can choose MAD-MIA-CUN using the IB/MX code-share agreement ...and avoid Iberworld if you wish.

Not anymore. In fact that was only a rumour.

Read reply 5. Those A332s have already been taken by Air Comet.

Well they do have it for Cental America. this is why they have unacceptably rised their price by around 200euros after NM went bust !! That's why I chose to fly DL (GVA-CDG-ATL-SJO) this upcoming December even if its longer. Because i find it unacceptable to pay 400 Swiss francs more than 5 years ago when they actually still gave you full service on European routes. I hope AF will start to SJO and PTY soon so that IB can reconsider giving better service!

no the 767 was a long time ago and the 747-400 were returned in 2006. By the way the 747-400 doesn't resolve the problem of the A321/343 gap

It's not like there is a huge gap between the A321 and the A340-300. The only aircraft between the two that Airbus produces is the A330-200 and A330-300.

I don't see there being much of a need for a large fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft since the A340-300 can do the same thing with more capacity and range.

I could see Iberia maybe ordering a pair of A330-200's but they don't really need them. Iberia tends to monopolize in their Latin American routes, not saying that there isn't other carriers but they do well on those routes. Airlines that are second to Iberia operate aircraft like the A330-200 and 767-300 on the routes because there is not as much demand as Iberia currently has.

Theres nothing unusual about a gap between the A321 and A340 anyway, most large airlines have it. The two aircraft serve different routes and functions. Its always been like this at Iberia anyway, the old fleet had a similar gap between the 757 and DC10.

If you dislike IB you can always flying with AA, CO or other NorthAmerica carriers. Or also via BOG, where Central America --specially to go to SJO and/or PTY-- is always accesible and close.

Braulio, fortunately there's enough competition in the civil aviation business. Even you're saying you will fly DL this time to fly Costa Rica. I'm sure if you find AF/DL provides you a better service than IB does ...you will fly AF/DL or any another airline.

that's why I booked AF/DL

I was referring to direct flights. Before when they announced a new airline, Air Madrid would entre competition I told myself it was good because it would put pressure on IB to increase service. But hwne one has competition like NM, one doesn't need to do an effort since NM was a total joke !
