Disgusted With KLM

Mon Feb 26, 2007 3:23 pm

I was watching a BBC documentary, "Drowning in Oil" depicting the plight of the poor in Equatorial Guinea. Oil companies in conjunction with the dictator have STOLEN all of the countries oil wealth and are continuing to do so while oppressing the poor and violating countless human rights.

I realize that after the discovery of oil Malabo became an attractive destination for European carriers but what KLM did (and god only knows why) is absolutely appalling. When the new airport was built, as part of the inauguration ceremonies KLM renamed what appears to be a 767 after the ruling dictator, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Absolutely disgusting. Think of some of the great people KLM have birds named after:

Marie Curie, Mother Theresa, Florence Nightingale, Maria Montessori, Niels Bohr, Ernest Hemingway... and now this scumbag!

I have written to Leo Van Wijk to express my disgust and I would encourage all other Flying Dutchman cardholders to do the same.

Seriously? That man is one of the absolute worst African leaders, and that's saying a lot. That's ludicrous; might as well name a 737 after Milosevic.

I saw this as well, and surely this documentary must have been filmed quite a while ago, as KLM has since stopped flying to Malabo and the B763ERs are in their last week of operation as we speak. Nevertheless, you raise a very valid point, and from a marketing perspective this documentary wasn't exactly good publicity for KLM.

The worst part of it was that there was a KL executive there kissing Obiang's ass and he even invited him on board for some champagne!!

Incidentally where are KL's 767s going?

As far as I know all B76's are/were named after famous bridges.

1/ when was the documentary filmed ?
2/ If KLM did stop flying to Malabo, it might explain why no 767 had that name recently.

But bear in mind that this is just a very small examples of what big companies have to do to deal with such governments.

All the 767's were named to Famous bridges, so i don't know were you got the info from, it's certainly not reliable.

Inaugural flights often bare the name of the city (or in this case something else local). These are a one-off only for that flight and namestickers are removed after return to AMS, so chances are small someone photographed it. For example, the 772ER that flew the inaugural CTU flight was renamed 'City of Chengdu'.

I saw it too. The 76 was still had the old KL color scheme. I don't like this sort of thing either. Certainly bad punblicity for KL

As much as I heard about that freaky dictator, it might as well have been a requirement by his government to have a plane named after him, if KL wanted to serve Malabo. So they probably did that just for the inaugural flight.

However, good thing that they stopped serving Malabo and apparently didn't keep that name.

Basically, KL didn't act any better than Condoleeza Rice, welcoming Obiang in Washington last year (or the year before...).

There's a fantastic book all about Obiang and his sick family, The Wonga Coup and the mercenary plot to invade Equitorial Guinea. Condolezza Rice welcomed Obiang in Washington saying 'You are a good friend and we welcome you'.

'Cause he got oil and doesn't like muslim extremists (or anyone else not kissing his butt).

There was an interesting report about Equatorial Guinea in the German newsmagazine "Der Spiegel" about half a year ago - stating many examples such as a journalist being beaten up for taking a picture of the passing presidents limousine, but nobody caring 'cause the government has signed longterm contracts with US firms for their tremendous oil fields in the sea.

I will take a picture during the documentary right when the name is visible and post it when I get home. Hopefully my PVR still has it on there. Yes KL's 767s were named for bridges but this was temporarily renamed.

That's probably right, just done for the occasion so that the local KLM bigshots could suck up to the scumbag even more. Interesting though, how he apparently declined to visit the cabin of the aircraft with his name on and prefers to zip off with his private jet. This is truly bad PR for KLM.

Yup. That's right. When KLM flew to NRT with the 777 for the first time, they renamed PH-BQD. Normally it's Darjeeling Railway, but they renamed it City of Tokyo. They also did this on a special occasion on a plane bound for SXM and renamed a 744 "St. Maarten".

Um, guys calm down. It's the name of an airplane for gods sake. It's not like when you step on the plane you become a friend of the guy. Just remember, if you are freaking out over a plane name, than you really need to get your priorities straight.

So if Pan Am were to have named a plane "Clipper Adolf Hitler" to commemorate the start of service to FRA it would be perfectly fine?

Like it or not, the name of a plane makes a statement about the airline - it shows tacit consent/support for the place or person. KLM should not be supporting a dictator like Mbasogo.

Hmm very interesting. I've searched for more stories about this and indeed found a couple of sites mentioning this.
I really haven't heard of this story before, not even in the Dutch media. Normally, the Dutch media can be quite outspoken about stories with a 'bad past' (don't know how to correctly put it in words).
