Any News: 747 Guam, Missing 727 Africa?

Tue Feb 27, 2007 3:27 am

What happened to the NWA 747 that took it's graceful final bow on the runway in Guam? Also, as I recall there was the mystery of a 727 missing in Africa..

IIRC, the NW B-747-200 with the collapsed nose gear was repaired and RTS. I don't know if it is still flying or stored now.

The missing B-727-200 has never been found, IIRC.

As for the NWA 747 N627US, several webpages list is as written off, though I´ve seen photos of it with the nosegear rectified and looking intact, but without titles. Probably wfu due to its age as its was anyway short of retirement when this mishap happened. There are no photos showing it in service again.

for the NWA 747 I guess they kind of had to fix it to get it ouf Guam, not sure how much free space they would have for a 747 to sit with its nose on the ground.

as to the 727, assuming it is the one i recall, (how many are missing?) then there was all sorts of talk about it being in various places and all, then the talk died down, either the media went on to something as they got bored or it became a cold case.

Maybe it's the all-white 727 parked at Denver Int'l Airport.  Smile

For a time, there was even talk that the B727 that crashed close to Christmas a few years back while leaving (I think) Nigeria and headed towards Beirut was the one that was missing...

Still, I'm quite certain that I had read that it was located.

By the way - here's the original thread about it: 727 Missing In Africa (by United777 May 30 2003 in Civil Aviation)

And here's one from a while later: 727 Missing In Africa (by United777 May 30 2003 in Civil Aviation)

And here's the transcript of an interview with the B727's pilot's sister:
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0307/08/ltm.12.html

Strange story nonetheless...

You know, I'd just like to take this opportunity to apologize for contaminating the message boards for people looking for info on the missing 727. If I could change my username at this point, I certainly would.  Sad

I find it very surprising that nobody so far can say what the status of the NWA 747 is. There are only two places were it can be, either still at Guam, or it was flown to the US, and is stored in the desert. A return to service seems very unlikely as someone would have posted a picture on a.net already. Should be easy to know after a few hundred members have read this thread.

It can be summed up in one word : Africa.

Over there, it's entirely possible (believe it or not).

It's amazing what can just "disappear" ... there's this airplane, and several cases of large ships that have simply vanished.

And no Bermuda Triangle nearby either.

Dunno if anyone's ever managed to steal and hide a train though.

Re N627US, see http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinqu...=627US&cmndfind.x=11&cmndfind.y=11
and note the certification date is AFTER the accident and that the aircraft is still on the active register!

Don´t know the date or location of this picture of N627US, doesn´t look very active though.

As for the certifcation, this makes it even more mysterious. No one has ever posted a photograph this airplane flying since its accident.

This is the accident that was referenced.

However, the crashed 727 and the missing 727 are both -223 models that were originally operated by American Airlines.

I ran into a former pilot with one of my former airlines that had been working out of that airfield doing bladder changes.

From the stories he told me, I suspect that they tried to sneak off without paying the local head-honcho and he suspects that they sent a couple of migs up to take care of the problem.

...and the professional aviation sites have it as a total loss also.

However, a total insurance loss doesn't make for an aircraft that won't fly again. The term is used to denote where the insurers have paid out the insured figure for the hull. They may then sell on the aircraft to someone else to break up, repair or whatever. Two points are clouding the issue here. It is still a Northwest owned machine according to the FAA who issued a new cert after the accident and it is known that the aircraft was eventually towed from where it came to rest back to the ramp.

Anyone here from Guam, or anyone been through Guam recently?

Thanks COSPN, missed your previous post. Presumably the FAA are keeping the aircraft on the register as there are issues re parking charges etc. and the aircraft is basically in one piece.

I see that 747 almost everyday just sitting there. It's parked just outside of the Continental hangar where they do checks on the 738s. I didn't know about the scrapping info until I read COSPN's post. That incident really caused a local stir regarding the airport fire team's response to the situation. I got into a heated debate with a friend of mine over whether the airport was really ready or not. Hopefully, next time something like that does happen, the firefighters will respond faster and in bigger numbers.

This is a bizarre case but maybe not really. There is a lot of evil stuff happening in Africa.

The plane may be being used by Victor Bout, the infamous Russian arms trafficker who works out or Sharjah....or one of this cronies. They allegedly traffick guns, people, diamonds or anything else that will pay.

That was in Cotonou, Benin, Christmas day 2002 or 2003. Last year parts of the fuselage were still lying on Cotonou beach. Now I happen to be in Cotonou this week, so I will check the beach again later (and get some photos!)
