The fact that 2 airlines have now committed to the 777X who currently don't use GE engines on their present 777's (JAL & ANA) bodes well for the prospects of the 777X. It appears the total support package and guarantees by GE more than offset any lack of commonality. Of course as we have seen in Aviation Week, there is really no commonality between any of the 777 designs as opposed to the 777X designs.

Actually, I read on several news web sites that Emirates Airways has signed a deal with Airbus to buy ten A3XX-100 planes.

Boeing 1, Airbus 1.

Mind you, I expect a number of 777 orders at Farnborough by the end of this week.

Boeing:
ANA 777x
ILFC 777x/737x

Airbus:
Air France A3XX
Emirates A3XX

Even if Boeing sells hundreds of Triple Sevens or whatsoever, with the first firm orders for the A3XX Airbus has won the Farnborough "Grand Prix" already...

I am comparing the 777 to the A330 on my scoreboard
not the A3xx!

Why are you comparing the 777x with the A330??

A more accurate comparison would be A340-500/600 with the 777-200LR/300ER

In that case Airbus wins conclusively!

Actually, Airbus A345/A346 sales have been very disappointing lately. The reason is simple: the current Boeing 772ER can fly SFO-HKG non-stop year-round, and that has seriously cut into A343/A345/A346 sales.

Note that because of the long range of the 772ER, AA, CO, DL and UA have bought lots of these planes. And several airlines in Asia are flying the 772ER on long routes (KE flies SEL-SFO and SEL-LAX with the 772ER).
