Indian Temporarily Suspends Dhaka, Ties With GMG

Wed Feb 28, 2007 10:30 am

According to the The Telegraph of India , Indian Airlines is withdrawing from Kolkata (Calcutta - CCU) to Dhaka (DAC) route. They have instead went in an agreement with GMG Airlines to serve the CCU-DAC and CCU-Chittagong markets whereby GMG flies Indian Airlines passengers on those routes. The move is said to be temporary, however, my gut feeling is that they won't restart the route anytime soon. There was a time when IC used to fly daily to Dhaka, and even 2 flights on certain days, but over the past decade, they have been reducing frequencies gradually. BG seemed to enjoy a near monopoly on the route, but AI and GMG changed that. This is great news for GMG as they can tap into IC's vast network across India.

AI's 3x weekly flights between CCU and DAC remains unaffected.

Were the loads/yields not good enough for IC? Any info on why they're pulling out of this route?

I think IC loads were not enough to justify daily regular flights (then regular flights altogether), especially if the aircraft could be used for more lucrative Middle East or Southeast Asia flights. Also, CCU happened to be one of Biman's more profitable routes all along, and BG managed to snatch away a lot of passengers from CCU to the rest of the world, and that allowed them to ply multiple frequencies on the route. IC's CCU-DAC route seemed to fall to neglect over the years, where IC never pushing CCU's connections with the rest of India (and having no connections to the ME - which are from other airports), I think they saw the demand for IC seats sag on the route. Eventually, they just relied on O&D traffic, but with BG's stranglehold, and because of higher demand for seats in other parts of the network, IC's frequency on the route dropped over the years, and now a complete pull out. It is sad to see after more than 35 years of continued service.
