LAX March 19th Attendees

Thu Mar 01, 2007 2:22 pm

I just wanted to see how many people will be at LAX on March 19th awaiting the A380 arrival. I'll definitely be there. How about you?

If I didn't have a lab that day, I could easily skip my other classes to fly out there. Turning in the Calc 2 homework would be difficult though.

I'd love to go, but it would have to be a fly in, watch, fly out same day thing... Does anyone know if there will be a public viewing area/etc?? That would make the $300 airfare more bearable for my broke-ass-self.

I am possible in but im at 50-50 do to school but who cares its a monday and school is boring on mondays so im going to try and get down at all costs, TransWorld at LAX there are some spotting areas already (aka. Imperial hill, In-n-out) but what ive heard is that LA times is making a hudge deal and are haveing a welcoming party and they say there is an expected 100,000 ppl in attendance so i think thats going to be crazy but to me i think i think at most 5,000ppl will show

So as the day approaches we will tally up all the people who'll be there and make sure you know this everyone the gate that is comptable for the A380 is only viewable from Imperial Hill.

I live in Santa Monica, so I will likely go. Do we have more detailed info? Is it for sure yet? I tend to spot from the lawn in front of In N Out, or else I go to Bradley. I suspect I would like to go into the airport and see the thing up close at a gate, rather than watch it land. Where is Imperial Hill? Will it definately be at a Bradley gate?
I come in peace

I'm in - with any luck it will come in midday so the 405 isn't completely stopped for my trip down. It would be really nice if we could find out what runway it will be landing on. If it's the North runways, I'll be camped out at In 'n Out!

Ok so just an update. According to the LA Times article, "around 9 a.m. March 19" and although I don't have any confirmation on this, it seems as though the plane will be coming from Europe and not Australia as previously thought. The article says that Qantas will have a crew onboard the flight seemingly implying that they'll just be passengers on this flight to LAX. Either way though, I suspect that the plane will be arriving on the south complex (25L/R) for a couple of reasons. (1) If 25L is done by 3/19 then I would think officials would want the plane to land there. (2) The south complex is a lot more camera friendly for news crews, etc. It's just a better vantage point in general to view the airfield. Officials estimating 100,000 people to see the plane arrive (we'll see about that).

But at least these many people out of those supposed 100,000 will be A.netters:

Ya Know....I live in Huntington Beach, and I look up every morning at the inbounds from S. Pacific and S. America.

With them expecting 100k in people...Maybe I will just look up with my camera that morning when "Wanada Dreaming" and "Big Momma" fly over.

Vs. Guessing if it will arrive on the North or South side, and fight traffic.

Hey ONTFlyer good job of finding the timing, but in case other people have not caught the timing

A380 ARRIVING Around 9 AM at the Southern Complex meaning IMPERIAL HILL is the Spot. As the day nears we will confirm everything and tally all the people who come and hopefully exchange contacts.

Honestly, that's probably nothing more than political speak. After all it's on a Monday and it's LA, with our typically late arriving crowd so even if 10,000 actually show up (still a big if), the majority of those people won't be there until after it arrives and most likely will barely be there in time to see it depart! haha!  biggrin

For any LAX badged folks, I hear Qantas/Airbus/LAWA are working on organizing something along the lines of an open house.

For LAX old timers they might remember Airbus / Lufthansa performed a similar event with the 1st A340-200 during its layover at the LH Cargo facility.

I wonder if our JFK brethren will have a gathering similar to LAX? (of course, keeping in mind that spotting locations at JFK are not as good as those at LAX, and there is no In'N'Out....)

Man Why does it have to be on a Monday, of all the days, and why 9am. eerrrrrrr

If the schedule changes ie time, to more like 3pm, then count me in.  crossfingers

As a suggestion, and just depends on all of you, but wouldn't it be nice if we A.Netters wear a badge with our screen names and real names so we can recognize the people around us. Since of course there's going to be a lot of us.

The last A.Net meet at LAX at the In-n-out was kind of hard to recognize who was there, since you had to ask people if they where there for the meet. So badges might able to help people recognize people from the forum.

Just my opinion, maybe somebody has a better idea.

Good Tip

Those who have other plans, cancel them what could be better than seeing the A380 for the first time (For Many of US) or atleast first time in the US.

That 100k number is nothing more than a way to justify paying cops overtime.

Seriously, LA has one of the worst records for overinflating the size of crowds. People who are actually at events come home and laugh when they read the inflated numbers in the newspapers for things like parades, protests, etc.

I expect a few thousand. Maybe.

Count me in, tentatively. The prospect of meeting other A.netters is tempting. But, depending on how the plans firm up for tours during static display, I may decide to venture airside to see it upon arrival.

Should I become privy to any info, I'll post here.

Shuttle? I've been through LAX numerous times, but I haven't spotted there. Any local advice would be greatly appreciated!

QXramper great to hear that we have another coming ! well the terminal is not far but it is a ways away from Imperial hill (90% thats were we are going to watch it land) imperial hill is like 1hr to 1hr 30min walk, 5-10min cab ride (about 10-25$$) now IN-N-OUT is allot closer maybe 15min walk and 2 min ride in cab. But im pretty sure with all the spotters coming most have a car and probably would pick u up if its not outa there way, but if ur staying there for a couple days rent a car!
