JetBLue New Route CLT-BOS Starts May 1st

Thu Mar 01, 2007 11:24 pm

Not a surprise here but jetBlue will be starting 1X Daily CLT-BOS E190 service on May 1, 2007. This will bring the grand total of jetBlue flights at Charlotte up to 5X Daily. I can't find an announcement of this service yet, but it is in their reservation system.

No shock at all. In fact, I'm surprised it took them this long. Still, I wouldn't look for it to change the sometimes exorbitant fares charged by US on the route. It's simply not enough capacity. OH to BOS at some point wouldn't shock me either.

I intierview with them yesterday.....and the interviewer said we were all in for a few suprises.....and something to do with canada! she claims that 18 cities will be annouced this year.....1 less than last year!

She also spoke of how they are really planning to build the boston operation....she said that JFK will still grow....but they are planning on making Boston a new focus of thiers and with in a few years BOS should have the same flights as JFK!

uh 1 daily to a business market like BOS???

I would think they need to fly at least 3 or 4 daily to compete with the 8 daily US flts

I agree and maybe that is in the cards for a later expansion. However they could take the non-stop one way and then connect in JFK on the way back for same day service.

Wow...Immediately, Boston-Toronto comes to mind. Can the terminal that jetBlue is in now at Logan handle a ramp-up like this?

Yes - I flew JFK-BOS last year and there were several gates (unoccupied at the time). So I'd say that they can handle quite a few more flights from BOS, although obviously they don't have as many gates as at JFK.

I find that hard to believe, especially considering there was a reduction in the number of deliveries for 2007, if I recall. Canada? Maybe Vancouver or Calgary with redeyes, but other than that I doubt it.

Not unless they find away to acquire about 10 more gates, in my opinion. Their BOS operation is sizeable and has some room to grow, but not that much. It will not match the flights from JFK (unless B6 shrinks at JFK)...

Youd need 3 if not 5 EMB190s on this route to compete

LCCs dont have a very good record on transborder markets, US LCCs are even worse than Canadian because the US-Canada market is something like 60% POS Canada and people generally fly their national carreirs. I think transborder taxes are so high it makes the LCC advantages much smaller versus legacies.

If B6 or FL begin flying to Canada, it is a sure sign they have too many planes.

Agreed. It sounds like token service, but I guess it is better than nothing. Hopefully they will grow this market out, but I have hoped for the same thing from CLT-BOS too.

Why would they be trying to compete? I think the service is offered for anyone who wants to get to BOS and for connections outside of BOS.. I don't think it is a pure O&D route alone..

Congrats on the interveiw and I hope it went well. Did you happen to interview in BOS? I know we had some sort of open house in BOS yesterday. Anyway I think the interviewer was mistaken or mis worded. We aren't opening up 18 new cities, maye 18 new routes, but not 18 cities. We really really over expanded last year and it hurt us big time. I think the company said something like 10-12 new cities. SFO, ACK, SDQ.

We've known about the BOS expansion for some time now. We will continue to grow the crew base and grow the daily departures. CO and YX will soon be giving up their gates in our wing of the C Terminal and that will give us the entire terminal, except for the Cape Air gate. We have plenty of expansion room in BOS so continue to look for new service to existing cities. As the company stated we will mainly be connecting the dots this year.

The problems of last month notwithstanding, I like jetBlue a lot. I'm not a frequent flier, and when I do it's usually via MHT. But I had $400+ in jetBlue credits thanks to personal travel I cancelled with them. I used half of it on a BOS-RDU-BOS trip last month and will use the other half this month on a BOS-MCO-BOS, both business related. So that gets me my money back.

I think the strategy to connect dots while the legacy carriers are still hybernating is a good one. Those fossils have to come to grips with new planes, never mind new routes. Now's the time to pounce, when they can only put up a token fight.

I believe we will have a total of 11 gates in BOS once we get all of the gates.

There are 11 gates in that wing of Terminal C. It might be possible to tighten up the spacing of the gates on the hammerhead to squeeze in one or two more; Delta was able to operate 757's and 767's out of most of those gates (and handle AF/SR 330's/340's as well) There isn't really room to add gates on the main pier. The main issues would be the gate lounges and the bottleneck of the security checkpoint with a larger operation. I'd guess a theoretical maximum of around 120 daily departures in the future, assuming the market could support that. There also might be some issues with crowded alleyways for several of the gates.

Quoting ADiZzy (Reply 2):
She also spoke of how they are really planning to build the boston operation....she said that JFK will still grow....but they are planning on making Boston a new focus of thiers and with in a few years BOS should have the same flights as JFK!

I just don't see that happening, given that they only have access to 11 gates. I can see that maxing out around 100-120 daily departures; currently they're operating around 60. The only way to grow any more would be to trade terminals with an airline with more gates -- but I don't see AA, DL, or US doing that. The BOS market couldn't really support a JFK-sized jetBlue operation in any event.

Quoting WMUPilot (Reply 13):

Unfortunately for B6, those are probably the worst two gates in the wing from a passenger comfort perspective. I'm still wondering where CO and YX are going to go, since three gates are not enough for CO's operation.

Actually six since another JFK round-trip is being added.

Agreed. Even a cheap fare to Canada looks expensive with $50-100 of extra taxes piled on.

The one flight instead of 3 or 5 could be a result of lack of available gates and times in CLT. Jet Blue uses the D terminal which means they have to share with charter flights and US Airways international flights for available gate since they are city owned. US Airways only has two gates in terminal D on a long term lease.

Not surprising, yet also good to see. They'll be adding:

MCO-PSE
MCO-IAD
BOS-CLT
BOS-BDA
JFK-SDQ

The only one of those that shocks me is JFK-SDQ. I thought the A320s had major baggage issues on this route?

I think the BOS-CLT flight is mostly for the leisure traveler; the timing isn't great for the business traveler. BOS-BDA should do really well as JFK-BDA did exceptionally well over the summer.

BOS-BDA will do well no doubt and so will routes like MCO-IAD and MCO-PSE, keep the MCO expansion going, JFK-SDQ, glad their back on that, but I wonder if their will be a cap on the flight to fit all that baggage, which supposedly is why they left SDQ, and also agree that BOS-CLT is probably aimed at leisure travelers because of the times, but maybe some business travelers will take it, but primarily it will be leisure it looks like. On the PR title though, they call it Bankers Run so it seems like they want to catch some business flyers, but I think if the flight goes well they can upgrade it and add an earlier flight, a mid afternoon flight and then like 1 or 2 later flights in the evening and night time. That way they can catch more business travelers, as long as gate space is not a problem, which it seems to be.

1 daily will compete fine for the fare-conscious passenger. Whether yields will be good enough is anyone's guess.

They could run 20 daily flights out of D and not be in anyone's way, and once the new Concourse E is open, they could theoretically move over there.

I will ad that this flight will most likely be filled with either leasure travelers, or any B6 loyalists that B6 has in BOS. I just don't see many CLT based frequent fliers giving up their dividend miles to fly on B6 when US has an exponentially better schedule between CLT and BOS.

CLT get one to Boston, and according to the N&O RDU gets yet another flight.

B6 is adding a 5th daily to JFK from RDU starting May 1.

RDU is having a heck of a year, and looks like the routes from the Carolina's are paying off for B6. Wonder what other moves we will see from the Carolina's for Jetblue.

I think that DELTA should give up a portion of its new shinny terminal in Boston and let JETBLUE move it. B6 deserves to be in the btter terminal since they are the better airline at Logan!
