Possible LTU Merger With Condor In The Works

Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:03 pm

Don't know if this has been posted before, but here it goes. Seems like Hans Rudolf Wöhrl, majority stake owner of LT, is considering a merger of LT with with DE. He said that he would like to see his company merge with rival DE, which is currently majority owned by the KarstadtQuelle Group. The negotiations between him and KarstadtQuelle have already made progress. If a merger was to happen, the new combined aircraft would become the second biggest German airline, behind LH.

Full article (German only): http://www.focus.de/finanzen/news/luftverkehr_nid_45584.html

I seriously wonder what the benefits of a merger between DE and LT would be. LT is cash strapped as it is and if I recall correctly, DE isn't in a good financial situation either. So what's the point?

EDIT: Added some background information and clarification.

Well that would be cool. But what about the pilot contract of DE with LH. Isn't it like this that the pilots can change between LH and DE and so on?

Furthermore you can read in this article that LT is shortly before ordering A340. So its not just a rumor.

Here a quote in German:
"Marbach deutete an, dass man kurz vor Abschluss eines Auftrages über vier A 340 stehe: „Das sind die besten Langstreckenflugzeuge von Airbus.“"

I guess this will be A340-300.

That could be one of the reason for concern. I don't think anything regarding the pilot's contracts has been mentioned in the article at all.

Question is, will that ever happen? It's been rumoured for a while that LT is thinking of acquiring A340s but it never became anything substantial.

I agree. The A340 would definitely make more sense than an A345 or even an A346 for LT.

Hi,
I would prefer a merger between Air Berlin and LTU: Air Berlin has no long-haul-flett, LTU has, so these merger would make sense. Condor and LTU? I am not sure...
One little correction: With the merger of Condor and LTU, this new airline would not become, as stated, the second largest carrier in Germany. Air Berlin would be bigger (Passengers Air Berlin 15,7 Mio.; Passengers Air Berlin+dBA 19,7 Mio. Passengers; Condor and LTU: 10,6 Mio (figures for 2005). Fleet (2006): Air Berlin + dBA: 73; Condor + LTU: 62)

So this information from Focus is not correct! Not very good work for such a magazine!

Greetings,

I agree. AB could also server as a feeder for LT longhaul flights, and perhaps this way, LT can focus on flying widebody equipment, while they can also get rid of their A32xs.
