A380 Visit To ORD On March 20th

Fri Mar 02, 2007 9:47 pm

Hi guys,
I know there are a few posts regarding A380 visits to LAX,JFK and IAD, but wanted to start an ORD post to see if there are any other A'netters out there planning on attending the visit on the 20th of March.

Hopefully the weather will improve dramatically in the next couple weeks, otherwise ground crews at ORD will need to learn how to de-ice an A380.

Spring is coming???? Sick of the ice, snow, and cold up here in GRR......  cold
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

To tell you the truth, there have been so many rumours of dates and destinations of the A380 visits, I'm not sure when its supposed to be coming to ORD anymore! While it was confirmed by Airbus and LH, the ORD visit was only confirmed as tentative. So who knows whats going to happen. If it is eventually confirmed, and its on the 20th, I'll be there.

I will be there!

I heard the only runways it can come in on is 14R or 32L. Does anyone know good spotting locations for those two approaches?

Are you sure it's still coming to ORD? All the current PR's don't mention ORD at all, just JFK, IAD, and LAX.

What times will it be in ORD? I have training in IND until 5pm (4pm@ORD), so I could potentially get up there by 8pm...

Per the chicago Tribune, it is supposed to make a stop in ORD arriving from the JFK visit on the 19th..As far as I know it is still a go.

It's definitely coming to ORD on the 20th. It should land about 1:00pm and will be on the ground for about 2.5 hours. Not all of the details are confirmed yet, so that is why we've seen very few specifics on the ORD visit - but trust me, it's coming.

Not to question your credibility, but what's your source for this info? No reason to doubt, just curious. Shame though, I'll be at ORD on the 10th!

I will be there with my friend Andy (A-Net wanna-be) grilling brats and drinking Warsteiner!

Too bad I will miss this visit if it comes. I look forward to seeing it though when it rolls on through ORD another time.

So noted, we will bring Spaten. Na zdrowie. Vivat.

BTW, only those from the UK or its former territories are allowed to call us Yanks.

And...I am German, thank you.

I'm pretty sure it's still up in the air right now. Last I heard it was not gonig to park at a gate, but would be somewhere close to the maintenance buildings. I'll post any info and soon as I get an update.

Ok, here's the latest. It's expected to be parked near terminal 5, but not parked at any gate. I suspect that it will be in the area where BD parks their plane sometimes.

Quick question, but a serious one (not being sarcastic): What is the purpose of these visits?

Are they trying to drum up some business for the struggling program? If so, I think it would be better to peddle a product that has actually met its performance specs. First impressions are quite important, and showing an aircraft in a market that likely won't order too many A380's too early in the process could prove to be very unsuccessful. That's the way my business works at least. I like to make sure I've crossed my t's and dotted my i's before I make a presentation. It simply hasn't delivered on its promises yet. I relate this only to the U.S. market. I don't question them showing it in other markets around the world.

On the other hand, I guess they have to do something. At least they are trying I suppose. From an aviation enthusiast standpoint, I would love to see the beast, but will the airlines?

Or are they simply trying to prove that these behmouth buses can be handled at these airports?

YEAH...

I'm all for having a get together prior to the mother-ship coming into the Windy City...

Perhaps a tail-gate party in the parking lot of the abandoned cargo building adjacent to rwy 22L? The parking lot is large, empty and right next to the rwy (and, no, there aren't any sign postings forbiding entrance to the lot). It would be a great location to spot any aircraft arriving on either 32L/14R.

Just a thought, my ORD brothers and sisters...

I was planning on going too. I usually park in the United/Northwest cargo employee parking lot. It gives a great view of 32L/14R and taxiways. I have never gotten kicked out there( I know a couple of Chicago ORD PD) . If you fellow a-netters have a better spotting spot, I would love to join you guys.

Regarding gates...I'm pretty sure no gate at ORD can take an A380 right now. T1 definitely can't, the 744s are just able to squeeze in.

My guess is if it comes, it'll be by the UA hangar or maybe even the military area. There's also a GA ramp east of T5 (just off the end of M21), perhaps it will park there.

Hmmm...ORD in spring weather. 2.5 hours. I bet it's not going to park, it'll go from the runway to the cue for takeoff ...

Hello all,

This is my first posting on this forum. I have been reading the forum with great interest for a long while.

I am holding the following information from a reliable source at Airbus.

March 21 JFK
March 21 JFK FRA Deutsche Lufthansa

I don't know if I'll be able to make it. Depends if my parents accept. I will either fly AirTran or Amtrak to ORD. Or I will have to wait many years for the A380 to come to MSP. Hopefully it won't be the second one. Does anyone know a cheap hotel, but not dirty in Chicago?

ORD A-netters:

The parking lot is at BLDG 513 on Express Center Drive - off of Montrose. This lot is adjacent to RWY 22L, and has a great view of the field.

Depending on the time of arrival, and, since I plan on taking the day off work, I'd say a start time around 10am (hey, it's a tailgate)...

What do y'all think? And, who's going to be there?

IIRC, M13 is in the "middle" of the Terminal 5 where there are acouple of "outcroppings" from the main building.

What do y'all think? And, who's going to be there?

You can count me in. I believe it will arrive at 1300 and leave around 1530. 1000 sounds like a good start time..Can't wait!!

Oh, I didn't know any of the gates could handle an A380. So I assume you mean near the "corner" of the terminal?

No. The corner gates can only handle smaller widebody aircraft.

The gates in the center of M concourse are designed to handle 744s and now 380s.

M Concourse Maxium Gate Capacity

Gate(s) Aircraft
1-3 M11
4-17 744
M18 757
M19 744
M20-21 767

The parking lot is at BLDG 513 on Express Center Drive - off of Montrose. This lot is adjacent to RWY 22L, and has a great view of the field.

Below is a link to the area LGB is talking about. Which parking lot is it?

Also, what if it comes in on 14R, we will see anything?

Should we have two meeting places depending on the wind direction?

Depending on the time of arrival, and, since I plan on taking the day off work, I'd say a start time around 10am (hey, it's a tailgate)...

Brats anyone?
