Wanted: 1 Carrier To Operate GLA-CDG!

Sat Mar 03, 2007 2:23 am

Quite unbelieveable - yet a city the size of GLA has *no* daily direct connection to CDG. Other similar sized & smaller UK cities manage to sustain at least 1 x daily service to CDG - why can't GLA?

AF have operated GLA-CDG in the past in various guises - they came, they went, came back and then are gone again. Air Scotland (who?!) had a very brief foray before they ceased operating. Flyglobespan held slots to Orly but nothing materialised.

The route would be perfect for EZY - anyone else agree?

Or perhaps bmi will surprise/shock us all - after closing their Paris base - it wouldn't surprise me for them to announce a GLA-CDG given their recent track record

Agreed.

GLA pax can't easily jump on Eurostar either, which is often the argument re: UK-Paris services.
Would mean Glasgow Central -> Euston -> Waterloo -> Paris and quite a few hours!!

It would have been handy for me on my upcoming RTW trip. I have a TLV-CDG-AMS-GLA routing in there.

I am thinking a EWR-GLA-CDG-GLA-EWR on CO would do the trick.

Probably a reason thereis no GLA-CDG flight is that it doesn't qualify for Scottish RDF funding (rather stupidly imo) because of FR's PIK-BVA

Would be an ideal route for AF or EZY

As a side note, some other UK regional airports with out a Paris service include CWL, BOH, MME, DSA, BLK and HUY

What about a daily Q400 service on BE?

Or, maybe EI could set up a GLA base, and serve GLA-CDG???? They have said they're looking at other bases outside Ireland!!!!

That would be excellent as there are many other destinations EI could serve. But the likely candidate would appear to be U2 with the rumour of a 5th bus coming this Autumn.

No. I do not see why two cities of given populations a certain distance apart should have any "right" to a direct air service. It is only very recently that EDI has direct transcontinental service, yet it is the Scottish capital city and regarded as the nation's financial capital. It's runway has been long enough and aircraft have had the range for direct NE American/SE Canadian flights for many years.

GLA is at most 50 miles (80 km) from EDI. In Scotland, most people have to cross Glasgow to get to GLA, yet most people do not have to cross Edinburgh to get to EDI. Despite being mainly two lanes. the M8 is a reliable road outside of the rush hours. [As the name suggests, I hail from the Buckfast triangle  Wink]. I concede that rail links could be better, especially as EDI lies very close to mainline railway.

Whilst I admit to west coast (Weegie) bias, at times flying in and out of EDI is a breeze compared to GLA. IMHO, the market will determine whether there is a direct flight or not. If it happens, I wish it every success.

Just my 1 RMB.

Cheers

I guess BE would be a candidate for CDG service, as mentiond earlier. They now serve CDG from NWI, SOU, EXT, CWL, BHX, MAN and EDI so GLA would be a logical addition. And if EDI can sustain two carriers to CDG (BE, AF) provding 2/3 flights a day each, why cant GLA sustain 1 carrier to CDG at least once a day, even wth FR doing PIK-BVA twice daily?

Perhaps you should recommend this route to Vueling. I imagine this would a good route for them when they establish their hub? at CDG.

Vueling would need to create brand awareness around GLA though. If they did that then I agree it could work for them

What about the twice daily service BACON service via BHX? That is direct. Same flight number, no change of gauge.

Not sure if this is one of the flights being axed though.

You have to de-plane in BHX.

AFAIK BE are keeping on the BHX-CDG service - no idea what's going to happen with the 'direct' ops.

We want non-stop service to/from Glasgow - no touchdowns or plane changes ... please ...

I'd say Easyjet will eventually add this route, but it all depends on the order of priority with other routes as new aircraft get added.

The sooner the better in my opinion.

An interesting thought - but right now I think they might be looking at a base closer to Southern Ireland.....  Wink
