Yep, this is a continuation of last year's work.

Last year they rehabed the southern end of 3R/21L at the 9R/27L intersection, so they can keep that runway open this year during reconstruction of the full runway. Work was obviously suspended over the winter.

They will use 27L for arrivals in place of 21L, for those aircraft coming from the east. This will work fine when the 21's/22's (and now 27L) since it does not intersect with any other runways besides that one that will be closed.

Potential delays could occur when the 3's/4's are in use, since 9R can't be used except for departures, or can't be used at all if 3L is being used for arrivals.

21's/22's is the prefered configuration anyways, which is used around 70% of the time, based on the prevailing wind direction.

Could they space departures around the arrivals...one lands, one departs, etc.?? I was thinking of how ORD departs 22L while arrivals are coming in on 27L. Just a thought. I wonder when 22L is going to be rehabilitated, do you know?

In theory, I believe they could do a stagger, but I don't know if that will be necessary.
Considering how NW operates a banked hub at DTW, for a majority of the day they arrivals & departure banks don't overlap, except in the early evening.

4R/22L will probably be rehabed in the next few years. I don't know what sort of shape it is in, but they just did a lot of work to 3L/21R about two years ago, leaving the 4R/22L as the last existing runway without a major overhaul. It was last overhauled and expanded in the early/mid '90's.

27R/ 9L hasn't been used in a long time.. right?

I remember a year or so ago landing on 27L when there were very strong winds out of the west/ northwest. Very atypical approach.... At the time they were arriving 22R and 27L, departing 22L and 21R. 21R departures were timed with 27L arrivals.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

27R gets uses on very rare occasions, such as a strong wind directly out of the west that exceeds the allowable crosswinds on the 21's/22's. Usually in that configuration they use 27L & 27R for arrivals and 22R for departures. Maybe only a handful of days each year, the rest of the time it is NOTAM'ed closed since it intersects with 3 of the primary runways and is usually just used as a taxiway. Only when a strong storm system or front as passed through does this occur, and can result in huge delays since only 1 runways in available for departures.

27L gets used a lot more frequently for arrivals, like in the example of this article whenever they close 3R/21L for maintenance. Last year 3R/21L was closed for a few months, and also a few years ago it was closed for a few weeks. DTW has the luxury to be able to close a runway and still have adequate capacity in most circumstances.
