RST Pursues Allegiant & Frontier Plus More NW & AA

Sun Mar 04, 2007 2:30 am

Rochester MN has its eyes set on landing 2 new airlines plus seeing expansion from existing carriers.

RST will meet with Allegiant in March, hoping to land flights to LAS. Allegiant seems to be an important target airline for RST. It appears RST is also interested in Allegiant to SFB and PIE but Vegas seems to be the first choice.

RST has also spoken with Frontier about DEN.

They also have discussed a second DET flight with NW and plan to talk with AA about bringing back a DFW flight.

Allegiant and Frontier would be interesting adding new west bound flights for the airport.

If Eagle were able to find the capacity to schedule an ERJ for the probably 4.5 hours required round-trip for DFW-RST-DFW, I think that getting DFW back is very doable. How did the RST-DFW market perform the last time around?

I can see Rochester in Allegiant. I'm sort of surprised it hasn't happened yet. Same with Fayetteville, AR or Fort Smith, AR.

It'd draw from La Crosse, Minneapolis - St. Paul, Albert Lea & Austin, and northern Iowa. You could probably toss Eau Claire into the mix. It might take a few Iowans away from Cedar Rapids but not enough to make or break the service at CID, I'm sure.

I've thought for a long time that XNA would make a good Allegiant city.

Personally I think it is great. I have my doubts however. TWA tried RST service twice and it flopped both times. Granted I have been gone a while so maybe the market and demand are up. I do hope that they get both of them. If I was a betting man I would bet that Allegiant stays and Frontier dies. I don't see a demand for DEN flights or connections.

Eh? TWA stopped because they got bought out.

I think G4 is probable...but F9 is iffy. RST has never really been one to provide financial relief to start-ups. The last DFW try, RST did waive gate fees for those flights but I never heard about that until after they left that route. Unless F9 sees better financial hopes in RST than they did in CID...who knows.

Kind of. TWA went away with the buy and AA canceled the service to St Louis. When AA did not continue with the STL flightS that was the second flop. The first being when TWA tried RST a few years prior only to pull out. The point I'm trying to make is that a service to other than RST, ORD, or DTW hasn't faired well in the past.

Is there enough demand for more service at RST? I swear more than half the aircraft in and out of RST are lifeguard flights.

I was under the impression the DFW flights were doing well when Eagle flew them a while back. One of the major reasons the "plug" was pulled was to use the equipment to ramp up the Love Field operations against WN.

Didn't GRB lose their DFW flight around the same time (for the same reason)?

Yup.

Quite true, but that's because of the extreme necessity for Mayo transportation. With Rochester getting (according to the City) over 500k visitors a year...anything more convienent than MSP and ORD is certainly going to thrive.

Meh. AA really didn't want anything to do with much of TWA's assets and they hugely downsized the hub. Many other cities lost service.

And the first "flop" was partially because they inherited the route from Ozark...a number of other flights were also lost because of that.

AA to DFW again I would think has a good shot. I was always surprised that AA used to be all mainline at RST before they retired the F100's, so I would think RST is a strong market for them, and gaining DFW back would provide better connections to the southeast and west for their frequent fliers in the area.

A second trip to DTW on NW also seems realistic as well since of course RST is in NWA's backyard so to speak and probably has a high amount of frequent fliers in the area.

Frontier I would think is a long shot. Allegiant would be more realistic, I could see them start out with LAS flights maybe 3 times a week, it certainly is a city/airport that seems to fit the Allegiant mold.

I am actualy surprised they don't have DL to ATL on their wish list. They seem to serve just about everywhere from ATL these days, plus with the skyteam connection to NWA I would have thought that an ATL route on the RST wish list would be a given.

There are alot of possibilities for RST.

E-135's from CLE for CO

CRJ's from ATL for DL

E-170's from Frontier....

Its all a possibility.

Same story I posted on top, they must have changed the URL when it moved from current news to some archive.
