What's Going On With DL 738's

Mon Mar 05, 2007 5:06 am

I remember reading that DL asked the bankruptucy judge to let them reject the leases on several 738's. What's the latest on that? What is going to happen to those birds? Any idea who would take them if DL returns them?

To my knowledge DL didn't reject any 738 leases. In fact if I recall correctly they own all their 738s. They did terminate the leases on all their old 732s and 733s and they have since left the fleet last fall. As for the 738, they are very happy with it from what I've been told. They have however for financial considerations deferred taking any new deliveries of 738s from Boeing until next year and are selling what was due to them to third parties this year, and actually making some much needed revenue in doing so. But this can't go on since DL is in need of more mainline equipment to pick-up on the success of many of the CRJ/EMB routes they have pioneered with their regional affiliates like Shuttle America and SkyWest. Expect DL to take more deliveries of 738s during 2008 along with some conversions of their 738 options to 125 seat 737NGs.

I agree with SLCUT2777 said. From what I hear they are very pleased with its capabilities, otherwise they wouldnt have excerised more options for delieveries.

I forsee DL actually leasing back some of the birds they're selling, but time will tell.

As for the 73Gs, config is still up for debate but latest I heard was 12/112.

I was under the impression that DL would not take anymore 738's for the time, instead they are selling the 38 they would be getting for 10 737-700. Is this not true?

DL should get winglets on its 738s.

When are their 737-700s scheduled for delivery, and how many have been ordered?

According to wikipedia, they ordered 10 737-700s, but I can't find the delivery date....

All they're actually doing is converting some of their options for the 738 to get some of the 737-700 models. There are some routes that just don't justify 150 seats.

It is essentially the same as a WN "Cattle-Carrier" only with a first class cabin (12 seats) that takes it down to 124-125 seats total.

If I recall correctly 10 have been ordered for delivery, with the first coming in 2008.

Actually, it's a little bit more complicated than that. Out of the 50 738s DL still has on order, 48 will be sold upon delivery to a third party, likely even at a profit for DL, and only the last two on order will be delivered to DL in 2009. The order for the 10 73Gs is actually a new order on top of their existing orders.

Ah, so I misunderstood things. They aren't getting rid of exsisting frames, they are just selling off frames in production/ production slots. And they could possibly be leasing frames already on order. Now I get it. I wondered why they would get rid of the 738s. To armchair CEO here, it seems like you could do international expansion by moving 757s to thinner routes and opening up new routes (South America). That would also free up 767s for expansion in Africa and South America (although Im sure the big bad Eagle would have something to say about that). There are some routes that get 757s that I think could easily go to 738 service, maybe with an extra frequency or two, like ATL-RSW, JAX, ONT.
Glad to hear they are getting 73G's, I thought the 738 was a bit overkill to put on MD80 routes, which made me think a lot of places, like IND, would go to being CRJ or 170 stations only. I would be fine with 170s, but the thought of CRJ's, well that's enough to keep me away from Delta

Hmm...any chance for YX to pick up a few frames to replace their MD80s?

The difference betwen the MD-88 and the -800 is 8 seats. I'm not sure I would characterize that as overkill.

Why would they? Doesn't seem like it would fit their fleet plans.

the 737-700s are being acquired for performance...not the smaller size. It never makes sense to buy a smaller aircraft from the same family just to have fewer seats because the cost for the smaller sibling is usually very close to the larger sibling.

DL will likely use the 737-700s for high altitude S. American routes as well as short runway airports in the Caribbean and in the Rockies.

I was thinking the same thing. I was actually assuming they would get some 900ERs for dense domestic routes normally served by 757-200s. DL wants to keep this international expansion up to keep up with CO @ EWR.

With the exception of ONT, I disagree with you. ATL-RSW and JAX could go out overbooked on 767s (and have). Last I heard, DL has cut all widebodies into JAX, which suggests that they really need them elsewhere. JAX-ATL flights are regularly overbooked even on the 763s.

Great! That'll definately help save them on fuel costs! They should put winglets on their 757s, 763ERs, and 772ERs as well (the 764ERs and the 772LRs to come already have raked wingtips).

Is DL installing the AVOD IFE on the 738s? I read somewhere they did, but I'm not sure.

That seems like an awful lot of capacity they thought they would need that now they won't have. How did they wind up with 38 more 737s on their hands than they can afford? That's practically a small airline.

The 'new' ex-TWA/AA 75's coming later this year are being delivered with winglets as are the new build 737-700's. Most of the 738's will be retrofitted over time, but there are a few early-build 738's that cannot be retrofitted due to the wing not being able to take the winglet without structural reinforcement.
