THAI/Vietnam Both To Launch TPE-LAX

Mon Mar 05, 2007 1:58 pm

http://news.money.chinatimes.com/CMo...ent+120601+122007030500400,00.html

Taiwan's Chinatimes on 05MAR07 has a report of interview with China Airlines' CEO.

The CEO says 2007 will still be a tough year in terms of competition, particularly both THAI and Vietnam Airlines will launch Taipei-Los Angeles flight this year.

I want to see Air Vietnam, not Vietnam Airlines.

Is there an English version of that report available?

How many airlines does that make flying LAX-TPE? SQ, BR, and CI I can think of off-hand - and now TG and VN? What is that going to do to yields?

I don't get this. Can any airline fly TPE-USA? What are the rights here?
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

It can make HAN-LAX, but not SGN-LAX. SGN is a stronger market than HAN, which is problematic. Still, the ability to carry passengers on all 3 sectors is attractive.

Not much of anything. The yields and traffic on the route can and have sustained more competition. Prior to their introduction of the money losing non-stop A345 service on BKK-LAX, TPE was one of the places that TG stopped with their 744s out of LAX. KIX was another.

Theres is a huge Vietnamese and Thai population in LA who mostly flys CI and BR back and forth to Vietnam and Thailand. I guess their home airline wants a piece of the lucrative action.

Is that TG service TPE-LAX to be in addition of their non-stop A345 service BKK-LAX or is this the possible replacement?

It has been argued earlier on here that TG plan to discontinues their non-stop BKK-LAX.

Not exactly on topic, but I was wondering if anyone here knew. I thought the US and Vietnam had normalized relations, and I haven't heard of any air service to Vietnam at all. Considering the large Vietnamese population in So Cal, and other SE Asian immigrants as well, how come its taken this long to start connections.Considering also that they export a large amount of goods here cargo loads should also be good. I thought UA was going to run a flight from SFO to SGN or HAN as well. Any info would be appreciated.

Any word on if, if this report is true, AA will codeshare on VN's TPE-LAX route? I know the two airlines still haven't fully implemented their originally-planned codeshare. VN, if I'm not mistaken, is already placing its code on AA's flights from CDG, FRA and NRT to major U.S. gateways and beyond, but AA still has yet to place its AA code on VN flights from NRT, CDG and FRA to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This TPE-LAX flight could signal the start of closer AA-VN cooperation but, after all, AA already codeshares extensively with EVA on all of that airlines TPE-U.S. flights, including LAX.

United has operated daily service to Vietnam since 2004. B744 SFO-HKG-SGN.

As a side note, when are we going to get pictures of a United 747-400 at SGN into the database?

I had hoped the inaugural flight would have provided an opportunity, but no. There are two great pictures of an EVA Air 747-400 there, so photography can't be completely forbidden.

Correct. In fact L.A.Area has the largest Thai population worldwide after Thailand itself and is considered 4 th
biggest"Thai"City.YES,Thai's and also Tourists bounding for Thailand use BR and CI, as they are normally
30% cheaper than the Naional Carrier,TG.However,I am hesitating to see this coming as this would basically
mean they either cancel the 340 Nonstop or add a 2nd flight with the 777 may be.

And there has been another discussion about TG's plan to up their nonstop US flights to daily, as opposed to their present measly 4 times.

Vietnam, although arrivals into the country is on the up-trend, is still a terribly low-yielding destination (HAN and SGN). With more business opportunities growing, this might change. Additionally, Tan Son Nhat (SGN) will soon see the opening of brand new terminal that is currently under contruction, underlining the government's push to keep Vietnam on par with her neighbours. I have recently taken 2 flights to/from Saigon and you can have a view of the airport via the photos in my trip report.

I'm sure they will be 5th freedom services with the flights originating/terminating at SGN for VN and at BKK for TG with a stop at TPE. 7th freedom rights to operate stand-alone service between two foreign countries without any link to the home country of the airline are extremely rare apart from certain cargo services, and of course within the EU "single market".

I would think that a SGN-HAN-LAX-HAN-SGN trip would be a good routing. I was in Vietnam last year and much preferred HAN over SGN from a tourist perspective.
