LON-DXB 200 Pounds? Even Cheaper From CPH?

Mon Mar 05, 2007 8:18 pm

Hey all!

Just heard from a friend in Dubai that he had some friends down on a visit who paid 200 pounds for their tickets to DXB return. This was from London, because they were there already, but had they flown from CPH, it would have been even cheaper!

Don't know which airline it was on (or routing) but no matter what this sounds crazy! Anybody knows if this is a general Y-fare in that market or if they really just struck a very lucky one-time-only-bargain? Certainly 200 pounds is no where near break-even, even if you have people sitting on the wings!

Condor currently has a fare of EUR99 plus taxes for a oneway FRA-DXB loaded into the CRSs... for a return that gives you EUR371.59 incl. taxes, roughly GBP250.

Were those GBP200 including taxes?

Since not everyone onboard will be paying GBP200, but only perhaps 10 pax or so, with the others paying between a little bit and significantly more than that, the airline very well could still be making a lot of money off the flight.  Wink

That's f*cking cheap, too! - Is it an accesible fare in GDS, or is it some booking class that's never available anyway?

Quoting Leskova (Reply 1):

Including everything - from CPH, taxes would have to include some extra for the stopover (no nonstop CPHDXB), so base fare likely to be below 100 pounds!

True, true, but the base fare still often takes more space than you think - also, even 250 pounds or maybe 300 is still very cheap I reckon. But 200: Crazy!

KLM is selling UK to Dubai for GBP 146 plus taxes on its website. The fare books in V-class and depending on the day of travel, there seem to be between 20 and 100 seats available at this fare. As it goes, there is plenty of availability for this fare.

The thing you need to realize is that London-Dubai is not a particularly long flight. 2972 nm combined with the fact that the aircraft that fly Europe-Dubai are pretty much always big widebodies with a very low CASM and fares like that make a fair amount of sense.

True, fares to the ME shouldn't directly be boxed with flights to, for instance, India - and widebodies do get the CASM down of course (and some extra for EK doing 3-4-3 in a T7..). But still, this fare level is definitely below cost.

Maybe, maybe not. It may well break even. Remember, despite its junk status lately, most international transactions are done in Dollars, which means the fare will be nearly $400, which combines with very low CASM to be probably closer to a break even fare than anything.

This is absolutely MAD! But I guess it's because the ex-LON market is so filled with capacity, that you really have to offer a good price if you want a pax to fly onestop. VIE-DXB etc. is probably much higher.

You got any estimate of the taxes? I reckon something like 50-60 pounds?

Hi Kevin 777

Taxes are quite high

SWISS is aprox 146 pounds

GULF approx 124 pounds on todays rate

We have now got to the stage where airport taxes are higher than airfares

Cheers!

Watch out. A lot of those "taxes" could well be fuel surcharges.

Oh I think it would.. The M.E. carriers are definitely putting growth above profitability right now.

But these fares are really low - including everything! Are they available? Can't find them anywhere on the web. Momondo finds LGW-DOH-DXB (with QR) for 258 punds everything included as the cheapest - in september 07

Businesses don't do that. Not well run ones anyway, which most of the major European flag carriers are these days. They would pull out of a market if it was hemoraging cash and go back when the time was right. Sure, if they were flying this on a 757, there might be a problem with the fare levels (maybe not), but the aircraft they use are so large that it really makes a difference.

I flew with VS last month LHR-DXB and paid £228 return including taxes - it was about the same time as BA had just canx and then re-instated big chunks of their schedule following the industrial dispute resolution. Just after the DXB flights were re-instated, LHR-DXB for £195 including taxes with BA was widely available with less than a week before travel!

Kevin, I booked the VS fare in December for travel in February on their website, I would gave preferred to travel from BHX with a SkyTeam carrier but neither AF nor KL could hold a candle to that price. The EK fare was almost laughable.

I don't know why I checked the BA website just after the industrial action was called off, perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment. This was a week before I was due to travel and ba.com had £195 inc taxes readily available for restricted economy. I guess having canx huge chunks of their schedule in anticipation of strike action, a good number of pax had already voted with their feet and made other arrangements. BA then slashed the prices on the affected days (my outbound date was would have been affected in week 2 of the strike) on the basis that some revenue is better than none at all!

Yes, they have quite close ties with EK. From DXB, they disperse JU pax to SYD/MEL/BNE/AKL/CHC/JNB, while via HAM, they transport JU pax to JFK.

JU is one of the longest serving European airlines (to DXB), previously on flights to SIN/MEL/SYD with DC 10's, but now with 733's via BEY.

Not being familiar with the climate of Dubai, when is this?? Because if this is in spring or summer, I reckon Europeans (including myself!) would rather stay at home when the weather is nice - besides, isn't DXB like 45 degrees in the summer?? Maybe a bit over the top for Northern Europeans..

Okay NO WAY!! No matter if you cut back staff untill it includes one pilot and a purser for a 747, and have the pax bring 100 gallons of jetA for the plane each, this is still a total loss-making fare!
