Well, if it is a new order, I can't see how the 747-400ERFs could be new since all production slots for that particular aircraft have been sold and all new orders are only for the 747-8I and 747-8F.

I guess it's possible someone converted their 744ERF order into 748F's therefore opening some slots...maybe?

I think the B-747-400ERF orders were actually from about 2 years ago. I'll bet this is really a story about a new B-747-800F order.

BTW, I never knew that Michael Jackson and Madonna used an An-124 on their world tours.

Can we confirm that this is a new order for 747-8Fs? The 747-400ERF order has to have already been placed as all production slots for the 747-400F/400ERF have been closed for some time.

If we take this article at face value, it would appear to be an order for 8 747-8F's (plus the 2 747-400ERF's already on order via GECAS). I'll try and find out more. . .

No, this can't be deja vu all over again. Are the operating economics of the An-124 comparable to the 748F -- but then again, political decisions don't have to be rational.

Indeed... These are the last (2) 744ERF orders.

Cathay Pacific Airways China East Asia 747-400ERF PW 22-Jun-2006 6
LoadAir Cargo Kuwait Middle East 747-400ERF GE 17-Jul-2006 2

They taking the (2) from LoadAir Cargo?

Did this deal fall though? http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2006/q3/060717c_pr.html

AN-124 can take bigger/bulkier load but I believe it does not take standard containers. So while AN-124 will still have plenty to do hauling engines and loads for constructions, most of cargo traffic is in containers. Looks like Volga-Dnepr is preparing to compete in the very congested mainstream cargo market.

Also, strangely, there is nothing on their site about the deal.
On somewhat related topic, IL-76 is back to the US!

Their website shows that the An124 can take a total of 6 standard 40ft shipping containers. (2 side by side, 3 down the row).

The An124 has no problem taking any kind of cargo it seems. Volga-Dnepr simply wants to expand its fleet.... and the 747-8F seems like a good choice for them.

By the way, besides Volga-Dnepr and Antonov Air Cargo, does any one else operate AN-124s?

This is good news for me. They started ops here at NGO last year. That means I will get to see a 748i here someday.

They move oversized cargo out of here time to time. A while back they were transporting wings for someone.
Volga-Dnepr also runs Air Bridge Cargo. They have a pretty livery.

As an opinion, I would say there is a chance they are behind the 5 x 747-8Fs booked as UFO on 30 November, 2006 and that they have either increased the order by 3 or there were 3 Options attached to the UFO order for 5.

I concur with your point on Airbrigde Cargo being the 2 x 744ERF via GECAS.

From the article linked by Manni

MOSCOW, March 12 (Reuters) - Russian air cargo company Volga-Dnepr has signed a $1.4 billion deal with U.S. Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile , Research) for five new 747-8 Freighter cargo planes to be delivered in 2010-2013, the Russian company said on Monday.

The firm's president Alexei Isaikin told reporters Volga-Dnepr also had an option to buy five more planes

So it appears to be 5 + 5 748Fs and no mention as to whether they are the 5 x UFO booked on November 30, 2006 and no mention whatsoever of any 744ERFs. Interesting.

So with this.....how many firm + options does the 747-8F & 747-8I have?

Does anyone think it is possible to have 150 firm orders for the 747-8 program by 747-8F EIS? (BTW, what is the EIS Date?)

thx

It's been acknowledged in the Media release by Boeing that the order is the 5 booked in November 2006 as they are the only 5 x 747-8F booked as UFO.

SEATTLE, March 12, 2007 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Moscow-based freight company Volga-Dnepr Group today announced an order for five Boeing 747-8 Freighters with purchase rights for an additional five airplanes.

Air Bridge Cargo, a subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr Group, will operate the airplanes valued at $ 1.4 billion at list prices. This order was previously accounted for and associated with an unidentified customer on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website in 2006.

Total firm orders and commitments now stand at 145 for all variants of the 747-8 Program.

Demand has proven to be robust and there are already some carriers that have made orders beginning to talk of converting their rights into firm orders to secure 2010 / 2012 delivery slots.

That is a very ignorant and factually incorrect statement.  Yeah sure

Volga-Dnepr is a private company and in fact, the first private Russian airline to start up in what was still the Soviet Union. So, they can order what they want, when they want (as long as they don't have problems financing it of course), without any interference from Putin or anyone else in the Kremlin. Please read up on the biography of their president, because that's where it says that the airline is not government run. He's one of the co-founders of this first private Russian airline.
