Fedex And UPS Fleets

Tue Mar 06, 2007 4:24 am

How do the FedEx and UPS fleets stack up against each other, both now and with known future orders? It seems to me that UPS are much more aggressively seeking aircraft (at least from Boeing), notwithstanding the FedEx B777F orders.

Thanks, Bruce.

UPS is looking for something to replace the defunked A-380-800F, as did FedEx. FedEx ordered 15 B-777-200LRFs to replace their A-380F order. FedEx is also looking for used B-757-200s to convert into CFs.. UPS is continuing with their MD-11CF conversions, they also have the 8 B-747-400s on order. I suspect UPS will convert these to B-747-800Fs unless they really need them to replace classic B-747-100CF/-200CF. I wouldn't doubt UPS orders the B-777-200LRF. Right now I don't see either of them ordering the A-330-200F, but things could change. UPS will need something to replace the B-727-100s, maybe B-737-400CFs. FedEx has a lot of older A-300s, A-310s, and DC-10s that should be replaced soon, I believe the B-757s will replace the B-727-200Fs. UPS will need to replace their DC-8Fs soon so that is why I think they will go for the B-777F.

A little pet peeve of mine, so please don't take this the wrong way - but there is NO 777-200LRF. There is only the 777-200F.

No, they won't. UPS will take all 8 747-400F's they have on order. In addition, they have orders (although at the moment I can't recall exactly how many) for 747-400BCF's. There are currently no plans to take the 747-8F.

Right about that. UPS has no desire in the A330-200F. None. At the moment, FedEx doesn't either. But then, as you say, things can change.

That would be quite a jump in capacity. IMHO, I think we'll see UPS eventually get the 767-300BCF to replace the DC-8 fleet, while FedEx could also get that aircraft, or possibly an A330 conversion when the time comes to start replacing the DC-10 fleet. OTOH, FX did take out 15 options on the 777 as well. . .  Wink

Looking? We have LOI for 87 frames from multiple (unnamed) carriers.

5X is currently in negotiations with Boeing for several a/c types to replace the A380 order.

The A300s and A310s are good. We are in negotiations with Boeing for a replacement on the DC10s that won't get converted to MD10.

Look for something from 5X in 4-6 weeks.

KC135, UPS isn't converting 744's to 748's. Hell the first one will be on property in 3 months. Very good chance at ordering 748's to add to the 744's. Replace the 727, That was done in 1988 with the 75 757's then in 1993 with the 767 for the DC-8 Intl flights then in 1998 with the A300's for DC-8 domestic. We only have something like 16 721's left and all will be gone in August. A 777 to replace a DC-8  Wow! What are you thinking? A DC-8 only hauls 18 cans!!! A 757 hauls 15. The A300 hauls 22 on the main deck and the 76 hauls 24 on the main deck. The 721 only hauls 8 cans. The 777 Hauls 27 cans on the main deck. Thats one more than our MD-11s and 3 less than our 742's. You can see that the 777 won't be replacing the DC-8  Yeah sure

UPS will be receiving 14 additional MD-11 converted freighters, 8 747-400F new freighters, 2 747-400BCF's, and 27 new 767-300F's. The MD-11 conversions are in work and the last of the 14 additional aircraft will be in service by late summer, 2008. The first 747 will arrive in June, 2007 and the last of the 10 aircraft will be in service by the fall of 2008.
The only aircraft that are currently scheduled for retirement are the last 16 727-100QF's and they will all be in storage within 6 months.
