Airlines-do They Support Democrats Or Republicans?

Tue Jul 25, 2000 6:05 pm

Just watching CNN and wondering who airlines swing their support to. Everyone knows labor votes Democrat, but what about airline bosses?

Thats very stupid but USAirways is Republicans official airline and United is Democrats official airline. I dont know for how long and I dont know if this is for supporting politicians or just for business.
Like USAirways is official airline for Rep's. They have some big meeting in upstate NY and whats going to happend after that meeting? They gonna still be their official airline????
Democrats have big meeting in Los Angeles and same question about United. Do they gonna stay with Democrats after that party?

As someone who works in and around the halls of power in Washington, I can assure you that airlines, like most other interest groups, give their support to incumbents of both parties. Their contributions will slightly favor the majority party. When Democrats were in power, they got the edge. Now that Republicans are in power, they favor Republicans. Business is business and they have to work with both sides.
Airliners.net has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

If indeed USAirways is the official airline of the Republican Convention, it's because they have the most flights there, and they would never let another carrier "dis" them at their own hub city. Same for United at LAX, although to be fair, LAX has a slightly more even distribution of flights of several airlines than at Philadelphia.

I've got news for you...the world has changed. Biocoastal has it right...lobbyists will support whomever will further their interests. Gone are the days when it was basically "Rockerfeller Republicans vs "FDR Democrats". Democrats have succumbed to the syron song of Wall st. and Republicans have become more populistic. Remember the 'Reagan Democrats'? As a union member airline employee I can tell you this: There is no lock-step knee-jerk affinity for Democrats anymore...this isn't the 1950's ( or eve the 60's and 70's for that matter ) Oh, you have some die-hards, but they go mostly unheeded-- in fact I remember we all got what would amount to a admonishing "nasty gram" from our union after the great GOP sweep of '94 because exit polling indicated that over 40% of labor ( I hate that term ) er...union members voted Republican. They were actually admonishing us for independent thought and not voting "single issue" as they always exhort us to do. This union member is more Conservative than your average suburbanite "suit". Basically airline employees are just a slice of America. Oh yeah, times have changed.
