NW/ATS Cuts Out AirStairs In OMA ;-) (pic)

Wed Mar 07, 2007 4:48 pm

Saw this while working the RON last night. Couldn't help but chuckle. I wish I could have caught them with a picture in the act but the ATS guys were actually climbing up the steep belt loaded with cleaning supplies and such and then coming sliding back down with full bags of trash. I laughed out loud as I was picturing NW execs thinking of this as a radical way to shave costs. If you don't have to pay for jet bridge use in a station and can instead use existing GSE, thinkg of the cost savings!

Big version: Width: 506 Height: 451 File size: 49kb

Sorry about the quality of the pic. Boss won't let us bring our own cameras in anymore so we just have to make do with what we can when we can thus the camera phone photo.

This happens a lot actually when airstairs are hard to find.

Not an uncommon sight at all. I have seen the many times over my years at SFO and LAX. Do what you gotta do!

Tripleboom - you made me laugh with this one bud, that's great. I can see it now ........................................

"UH UM, Ummm k folks, all come to order, here in our Executive Board meeting today as we sit ( in any big top 5 board meeting for UA, AA, DL, CO, NW) and folks, we need to find more cuts. Come on people we need more cuts, we need them, I want my 500,000 bonus this year. Come on, we've taken everything else away from the flying pax today, what else can we do, those pax are spoiled, what else do they want from us, I mean we give them a seat and that even includes a seatback pocket, come on all, brainstorm people, there have to be more cuts people, let's find them. Any ideas, anybody, come on people, who has, oh eh, you there, k, k, you there with your hand up, what's your cost cutting initiative?

(Board member dressed in Italian suit costing $2,500 and makes six figures and has 3 B.S degrees jumps up)........ um yes Mr CEO, I think, well sir, I think, um, well sir, let's go for it, let's eliminate the need for jetways, jetbridges, airstairs, and let's open up our minds team, let's do it, let's make the people earn their flight and work for it, they have to climb to the plane on baggage loaders, come on, (cheers and chants heard in background as board members see visions of airline bonuses now coming a possiblity), let's do it, we'll do away with jetbridges, we'll get rid of the portable trucks with airstairs we had to buy, and we'll cross utilize our baggage loaders, yeah, and moreso, let's cross train, all ground personnel have to know, learn and pass playing a game of catch, just in case a pax falls, then our ground person can catch them and then, oh oh oh, I have two ideas Mr CEO, that'll eliminate any lawsuits sir, yeah, yeah, yah!!!

(Surrounding crowd in great approval smiling and nodding and shaking each other's hands as if they saved the world)

And then us, those that really make things happen in aviation and make this work, and make that happen, and we are the day to day survival of true airline operations and because of the basic principle of getting it done, well, then we read in some press release or hear on some chat page that it had been talked and rumored about for days, well, yep, it's true, I have to see some CEO come up with what they think is an earth shattering, money saving, stupid mind numbing ridiculous idea, and then after the major press release that jetbridges and jetways and airstairs to be eliminated, following the press release, airline officials happy to announce that the CEO and board members are offered bonuses in amounts equaling 10X what the majority of their own employees make in an entire year.

Tripleboom - this should become like a new weekly feature, as you are working, try to get pictures like this more often, it's great, any picture of what might be the next airline cost cutting idea, it'll be fun to create some laughter for us all

I guess she concluded it distracted us from work too much. (Which could be true on some days. Still trying to catch that Air Force E-5 from Offutt on it's touch and gos.)

LOL.. that shouldn't prove too difficult around here. ATS and DL comair are always good for a laugh, or sometimes a sad, slow shaking of the head.

Just a couple weeks ago an ATS superivser for NW ramp operations actually went out to an ACTIVE TAXIWAY in an attempt to appease a Captain that wanted ballast for W & B but did not want to RTG. Apparently the crew of the NW a/c departed the gate, finished their W & B calculations and discovered they were out of trim. They called back to NW ATS ops and requested ballast. The ATS sup replied they should RTG where that could be accomadated to which the Capt, in either an act of pitiful stupidity or perhaps in an attempt to test just how stupid the contracted ramp employees were, responded that he was "union" and they needed to come to him. So the ATS sup and another ramper hopped in a truck and drove out onto the active taxiway. OMA Airport Authority wasn't far behind and advised that they should follow them back to the Airport Police station where they could turn in their SIDA badges and were welcome to go home at that point. (Source: OMA Station Manager's Meeting 05MAR07)

Sad, stupid, irresponsible. I'm open to more suggestions on adjectives to describe that disgrace.

How long have you been working at an airport, that you haven't seen this before? I would hazard a guess that this same picture could be taken at most any busy airport on any given night.

Exactly...not an uncommon sight at all. When I was a ramp rat for Delta at OAK, we used the belt loader all the time to access the airplane at RON's or the rear doors.

I have in fact seen it plenty of times. The whole NW board meeting picture popped into my head and I couldn't help but laugh this time. I've seen plenty of these kinds of pics before but this one just struck me as funny this time.

I have boarded, as crew, the aircraft throught the service door on the DC-9 through the catering truck because of no stairs being available and no jetway. Always makes for a fun start to the day.

This happens all the time in stations that have multiple RON's, and it is completely acceptable to do. They are OSHA compliant by having the rail up, so there is no issue.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever
