Alco. Bevs - USA Biz Lounges Only Ones To Charge?

Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:51 am

I was wondering last Sunday - In my own experience, Biz Class lounges in the US are the only ones to charge for Alcoholic bevs.

For example, if I fly Business on AA to ORD, drinks are free in LHR's Admirals Club however, you get charged to high heaven if you are at ORD's Admiral's Club even if you are still flying business to say LHR.

Even if you fly to DUB from LHR with BMI or Aer Lingus, your drinks are free.

They don't even seem to be subsidised in the US, you get charged the full whack and more.

Not the case at Northwest WorldClubs. Buzz is for free there.

CO doesn't charge in their President's Clubs. United, American and US Airways all do charge in their respective clubs.

AA doesn't charge in their Flagship Lounges at LAX, ORD and soon JFK.

I've not flown AA J internationally but as a BA Silver/Gold I always get given drinks vouchers, even on domestic flights and you can always go and get more. On United internationally in C I've been given drinks vouchers in the RCCs, however as a Star Gold flying domestically with them I've not been given them.

Don't UA's IFLs have free booze? (not been in them either)

You should be given drink vouchers at ORD. Next time ask for them.

And no, not all USA clubs charge. Skyteam (DL,NW,CO) lounges don't.

If you are flying on an international itinerary (which in AA's mind excludes the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico - Mexico City is an exception and is considered International) and are an AAdvantage Platinum/Executive Platinum member and/or are traveling in International Itinerary (I say this because if one is flying STL-JFK-LHR you will receive lounge access in STL and in JFK) in F/J you will receive drink coupons, which are good towards bottles of water/booze.

Long story short, AA''s Admirals Club/Flagship Lounge policies are really complicated.

As an EXP on AA i find that when flying internationally from the US i get as many free alcohol coupons as i want. If you just go to the desk and ask for some more if you run out they always give you some.

Domestically they are not free but again as an EXP i have found they give me one or two when i ask and they usaully say they will give me more as and when i want them.

If flying in J or F and non status i think that they will also give you coupons. I am unsure as i havnt flown AA in J or F when i wasnt a Plat or EXP.

I've complained once or twice about this... even after purchasing the membership the clubs decide to charge me 7 bucks or more for a sky and diet, meanwhile on the plane it's only 5... ahh well.. I don't think I'm going to renew the membership.. AA has gotten too cheap no matter how nice the clubs are..

And the only one I really find worth it is the Flagship Lounge. At LAX, though it was self serve, it was well appointed, with free drinks, champagne, food including smoked salmon, etc.

Unfortunately, it is their best, most exclusive club. Yet the Qantas club in Perth had all the same things (though it was a bit louder). And that was open to a lot more people.

It is really a disgrace how the airlines from the country that was for a long time praised as "service heaven" have gone down the river service-wise!
