TWA Jet Explodes At Las Vegas This Day 1972.

Thu Mar 08, 2007 6:13 pm

This is well before the days of Al Quaeda etc, but did anybody ever find out who was behind it?

Also, what became of the jet? Was it written off as it appears only the cockpit was destroyed.

It unfortunatley wasnt that uncommon for crazies to blow up planes for the insurance money back in those days.

In 1955 or so a UA DC-6 exploded killing all on a flight from DEN-PDX, a guy wanted to collect insurance money on his wife.

In 1962 a CO 707 was bombed on route from ORD-KCI, for the same reason.

In 1944 my grandfather just missed a flight by a few minutes in Quebec. It was a Dc-3 and it was bombed for insurance money

1972 However is about the time terror began rearing its head. But since this was in LAS, it probably wasnt a political terror act by middle eastern terrorists, who at that time were communists and pan arabists, not islamists

This is my favourite quote in the story:

""US President Richard Nixon said that the government would mobilise all resources "until the current threat is crushed."

While Bill Clinton, GW Bush and GHW Bush get blamed for not doing anyhing about terrorism from 1980s through 9/11/2001, the 1970s were even worse.

In 1974, a TWA 707 was bombed midflight from ATH to FCO killing all on board. The US response was absolutely nothing, even less than PA 103 which resulted in a conviction and new technology to spot plastic explosives.

The 1970 Dawson Field incident resulted in nothing as well.

a Swissair DC-8 was bombed killing all on board. I am sure the next day at the UN was business as usual.

"The aircraft which exploded in Las Vegas was thoroughly searched and left New York after the first bomb was discovered.

It flew to Las Vegas with only 10 passengers and was searched again once it landed. "

Oh the days before deregulation! Was this a scheduled service, or with all the checks did passngers got re routed?

I think it's fair to see why it was written off now! That would have had a devasting effect had it been airborne......
