It attracts my attention the CDG-AMS leg as it could be a bit daring trying a competition with AF-KL specially on that route.

I'd like see Vueling being a real competition to both, Ryanair and EasyJet.

They still are very far away, but at least, Vueling is starting to go on the right way.

Pardon my ignorance... but does the EU have an open skies policy? And if so, can any EU airline fly any route within it?

Yes sir! That's how Ryanair and Easyjet (amongst others) fly everywhere.
I scratch my head, therefore I am.

Good to see someone going up against the AF/KL monopoly on CDG-AMS.....I just never expected it would be Vueling to be the airline to do it! When I looked into fares back in Dec06 for travel in Feb07, the cheapest I could find was 140 Euros! One way!

Yes we do have intra-open skies as well as open skies with 3rd countries.

The first one means any EU airline can fly from any EU airport to any EU airport. Legacies (mostly) still fly with origin/destination their own country but LCC's use this tool widely.
The second one means any EU airline can fly from/to any EU airport to/from any 3rd country airport (and onto other countries if rights are granted), and any 3rd country airline can fly from/to any EU airport to/from any 3rd country airport (and onto other countries if rights are granted).

Basicly it's like considering the 27 EU members as 1 country.

Well, this is not quite true yet and it will take many, many years before it's like this. True, the EU are negotiating with several countries for these rights, but it's far from a done deal.

First, let's define it a bit better:

1. The EU open-skies policy is actually the ECAA (European Common Aviation Area) policy, which is indeed directed by an EU board, but it also includes Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and in the near future most of the Balkan countries, like Croatia and Servia, that have agreed to join but have ti work out legislation.

2. The agreement like you describe, is only signed with Chili and Morocco yet. Negotiations (in a earlier or later stadium) are in place with Ukraine (draft agreement), Russia, Austrlia, New Zealand, Canada and of course, the USA. For the USA and Canada, the EU hopes to get the agreement done in 2007, but it's not certain yet.
