Is This Photo Real?

Fri Mar 09, 2007 2:55 pm

I just came across this photo and can't figure out if its real. If its real, than its hilarious. What the hell happened? Looks like the cargo container was sucked into the L-1011 engine. There are some other funny aviation mishap pictures on this site. Sorry if this has already been posted. (Link is split in half so it doesn't make the line too long)

Looks real to me.
It was probably a stiff wind. If it was Atlanta...could have been a severe thunderstorm out ahead of some tornados. Those winds can get up there, and an empty baggage container is no match.

I don't think that it's real, the Delta Logo on the cargo container look more pixelated than the Delta logo on the engine. Just my opinion, I'm sure someone here knows whether it's real or not.

It is real. The picture is in some of our company trainning videos. The can wasn't properly secured during high winds.

It needs a smaller cargo container.

I don't think it was a stiff wind. I think that can was on the gate when the aircraft was coming in with the engine on. The gate crew didn't clear the area prior to arrival and the can got sucked in when the engine got too close.

This has been in some safety videos and slides prevented before. If I remember correctly, this was caused by the intake suction of the engine (L1011 if I am not correct).

Hahaha... I am thinking maybe towards the end... But as I remember this picture was one of many taken to record the damage.

Almost... This happened because an 757 and a L-10 were pushed out nose to tail, and one of the Delta ramp agents (I will spare his name) drove between the 757 and the L-10 with a string of empty LD-2's. Unfortunately, the 757 powered up right as the agent got behind the 757. And the rest can be figured out from the picture...

However, the really crappy part of all of this was that L-10 was headed to HNL from DFW and was full... Needless to say that Flt didn't help DL on-time numbers that month...

Yup N160LH has it right. It wasn't wind. It was jet wash.

Yeah, there would have to be other factors at play here. Theres no wind that would do that, it'd have to be sucked in there or thrown by another aircrafts thrust.

I beleive it was cause when a tug passed behind a American 757 and the jetblast blew the insecuredt can from the cart and then was sucked up into the engine.

I can also attest that it is real. It's a situation we talk about in our safety training at my employer.
Yep, the 757 wash blew it into the L-10 intake, IIRC.
MOMMA ALWAYS WARNED ME about taking bites too big for my mouth. Guess that L-10 didn't receive that lesson.

Or a APE or even an LD2. (Specifically designed for B767 aircraft, just like AQF's. )

In this case you're right... However, I have seen the wind knock off empty LD-2's and 3's from transporters, and move them a pretty good distance..!

Didn't I already say this...? And no it was a Delta 757..!

Its fun to think about the good old days at DFW... Sadly it is beginning to feel like a long time ago... ?

Wow, that is pretty amazing. I would think the chance of one plane blowing an object precisely into the engine of another is really low. I'm amazed that the container just hung on there. It looks like its pretty precariously perched.

It's not like shooting pool, or trying to get a hole-in-one on the golf course. All it needed was to get blown into the general direction and once it got close enough, the engine's intake took over.
