What a disturbing picture. I am sitting here in IAH waiting for my flight out to land, and believe me, seeing that makes me want to call in sick for my 757 back to EWR. What a sad, sad day.

There is a better, more true-to-life version of the photo at the following address:

http://www.airdisaster.com/photos/afsst/1.jpg

This photo bears an eerie resemblance to the one of PSA 182, which was snapped by an onlooker back in 1978 when the 727 was struck by a private plane and knocked from the sky. The only difference is that the Concorde is in roughly horizontal flight, while the PSA 727 was essentially plummeting to the ground.

http://www.airdisaster.com/photos/psa182/1.jpg

Either way, these are very, very sad photos to look at.   The horror comes not from the image itself, but the thoughts that spring from it--what were the people on board thinking? Who were they? What were their dreams and ambitions? What lives did they lead?

It strikes home that these were *people* just like you or I. And now they are gone. May they all rest in peace.

I just have to say that I am glad that the engine fire did not occur in flight or over the ocean.

I just did a little estimate based on the length of the visible flame as compared to the plane (and excluding the smoke, just the flame you could see). That fire extended in excess of 180 feet behind the plane.

AerLingus: Had the engine fire occurred over the ocean, at least nobody on the ground would have had to die. Other than that, it would have made little difference - the poor passengers had no chance in either case.

USAirways: Where is a better pic? Your post is blank.

It is difficult to imagine the heroic measures of the crew when they realized they had a problem. My prayers to all the familes of those lost. We in aviation can stand tall and yet accept yet another loss of our brothers and sisters. God bless.

Sky News reported that a teenage spotter at CDG took the photo.

Had the fire occurred over the ocean then those on board would have had minutes of horror to experience before dying instead of only seconds as they did after takeoff. Still, God Bless them all.

Who are these guys?

Yahoo.com says they are spotters. Then they must surely visit this site...are you out there?

Yes, from Yahoo:

Andras Kisgergeley, 20, flanked by 22-year-old travel mate Szabolcs Szalmasi, snapped a picture of the aircraft in flames while it was still in the air.

I noticed one of them, Andras Kisgergely has photos on this site. Search for "Kisgergely"...

Freddy,

The two dudes in that picture look a little bit too pleased with themselves. The least they could have done was to not alow themselves to be photographed.

On the plus side, it's probably lucky that they got a picture (it can help immensely in an investigation), let's hope they took it to the authorities first instead of the tabloids, but in this day and age it's doubtful.

In their defense, the camera may have caught them with an expression that they did not intend to have. Reuters probably rushed it off to be printed, and from there on to the wire and the 'net before they could even see what it looked like. The photographer may also have told them what to do, and they may have just followed along.

I understand how this must look given the circumstances, but things are not always as they seem...I'd be grateful that they got this shot, disturbing and heart-wrenching as it is, because it may help give investigators some answers and allow them to figure out what happened here. And in doing so, prevent this terrible tragedy from ever happening again.

Guys for gods sake grow up. I would be extremely pleased if I were able to shoot a photo like that. What do you want them to do, walk about crying all day?

Whether these guys are happy or not does not change anything. They took the shot that will be of great help finding the answers to this accident, they deserve to be happy.

People die all the time all over the world. It's a hard reality to face but I suggest you do it. One day it's your turn and no one will thank you for having wasted your life feeling blue.

So, all you guys that are bitching that the two young lads have a pleasant look on their face, tell me have you smiled at all since the accident????? I'm sure you have.

The devastation of the accident probably hasnt taken its toll on them yet, plus the excitement of capturing such a moment.

Remember, they took a picture of a aircraft on fire, not of people dying!

Will you all be so equally disgusted at the news coverage of the post accident scene and of the grieving relatives and friends to decide not to watch it all??? I doubt it very much.

It's all so easy to sit back and be so righteous about it all, but I bet if any of you (with negative comments about those young men) took that pic and had just been paid a healthy sum for it by an international news agency that you'd be smiling too!

Don´t damn these guys. They are not really smiling because of happiness. What will be the expression on your face, if you appear in the world press for the first time? Most people smile slightly when they feel a bit uncertain in a new uncommon situation.

I agree. Lighten up. These guys didn't cause the crash and I highly doubt that they are pleased with the fact that the flight went down. They're just like you and me - plane freaks (who happened to be at the right place at the right time).

More Pics Out There?

Wed Jul 26, 2000 8:05 pm

I bet there are more photos out there, we are yet to see maybe amature video footage. Paris CDG was very popular with spotters many gathering to watch Concorde.

Yes: I've just seen the amateur video taken from a truck going on a highway near CDG. The images are very impressive indeed. The fire and smoke trail is incredibly long. The tower and pilots must have noticed that something was going wrong even during take off.

I hope that we will get some info about the flight data recorders soon.

Amazing...

Where did you see this? Was it on television, or did it come from other sources?

From your description, I'm guessing that these images will rank up there with the video taken of the crash of 232 in Sioux City, and the Air France A320 crash in Tolouse.

This may be one of the most-captured crash in the history of aviation, as far as media is concerned. I have mixed feelings about watching this tape if it ever comes out, but it might help investigators figure out what happened. I also hope that data from the FDR's and CVR are released sooner rather than later so that the public, and most importantly, the families of victims, can get some answers.

I saw it 30 min ago on a spanish TV station, but did not see it on any other (even CNN or German stations) yet. I think the guy of the tape has done some extensive calls trying to get the most of money out of this really horrific footage.

To say it again: For me, it is one of the videos that has impressed me most of all I have seen before. The duration is about 10 seconds and you can see the Concorde passing above the highway and continuing its way to fate. The last moments (before going down and impact) are (fortunately) not on the film!

I'm sure it will be shown in some hours all over the world, as soon as the Station which bought the video is selling it to others...

I give full credit to the 2 Hungarian guys who took that heart-rending photo. That they, while plane-spotting in Europe by driving from city to city, were able to capture that sad yet breathtaking shot of the doomed Concorde says something of their wits and composure in being able to photograph a scene which would drive others nearly hysterical. In the photo in which they are shown, their expressions are not really happy; in fact they are indeterminate. Who knows what must be going through their minds as they pose with a picture which would simultaneously go down as one of aviation's most famous and one of its most tragic?

Congratulations Andras and Szabolcs. Well done indeed. Perhaps they may capture an award for that picture. I think that they deserve it.

As with all my posts on this subject, I express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who died in that horrible accident. May they all rest in peace. May F-BTSC, an icon in her own right, also rest in peace.

Video Of The Concorde Crash Here

Thu Jul 27, 2000 8:17 am

Here´s a link to the video clip of the concorde when it passes the freeway taken from a passing truck.
May all the people who died in this horrific disaster rest in peace and may all powers be laid into preventing such plane crashes in the future.
