Connecting Time In MEM: 1 Hour Enough (intl)?

Sun Mar 11, 2007 5:27 pm

Hi all,

I plan a trip from AMS to MCI via MEM. KL offers a connecting fight with just 1 hour at MEM. Is it long enough to clear immigration and agriculture and connect my domestic flight? Seems to be a little bit short form my others experiences in the US.

Any tough from MEM?

Regards,

MEM is a relatively compact airport, I have connected through there many times although not internationally. I would think 1 hour would be enough, I have connected there on domestic flights with 30 minute connections and it was more than enough time.

About once a month I have the pleasure to clear U.S. passport and custom control and I have to tell you, that in my case, travelling with a Swiss passport with stamps from all over the world, it usually takes a lot of time.

There are not many international flights at Memphis, this might be your chance. I was there only once with your flight from Amsterdam and it was OK.

But usually I manage to be among the first passengers to leave the aircraft and then I end up to be among the last passengers of the very same flight to clear customs control, only because I get a special attention from the officers... Every third time I have to open my suitcase, usually after waiting 20 to 30 minutes.

And you also need to consider that you might to go through security control again, another challenging and time consuming task on many U.S. airports...
My favourite planes flown: Lockheed 188 Electra, Tridents, VC-10, B-707, L-1011, A330, E90 + Concorde

I flew to MEM twice. First time was on a KL MD11 AMS-MEM, MEM being the final destination. We were seated in the back of the MD11, which was completely full. KL625 AMS-MEM was the only international flight arriving (and still is, if I'm not mistaken). From the moment we got of the plane, collected our bags, went through immigration/customs and got our rental car, took not more than 30 minutes!

The second time was ORD-MEM-MCO. Our aircraft from ORD was used for the MEM-MCO leg, coudn't be easier Big grin .
We got of the plane, waited about 20 minutes at the gate and 30 minutes after arriving in MEM we were airborne again!

MEM is relatively small and easy to get around, although I admit a 1 hour transfer is tight, it is possible.

In MEM you won't have to go through security again if you are going to MCI which I am sure is still a mainline flight your inbound flight comes into the end of B concourse and all mainline flights are in the B concourse as well. All depends how fast you get through customs...You might be ok.

You always have to go through security again when you are coming off of an international flight (except certain flights from Canada, the Caribbean which are pre-cleared) as you have come into contact with your checked bags in customs.

Airlines won't sell you a connection they don't think you can make.

Hi all,

Thanks for all these valuable inputs. I could now consider this option.

Air France will, with no problem at all. Then you have to argue with the clerk at the connection desk, which explain that you should not accept such tight transfer, even if AF reservations desk offers it. I know, that's weird Big grin

No worries. I fly TATL on NW/KL every two months and AMS-MEM NW57 is my favorite flight because MEM is such a small airport and I do not believe there is another international flight arriving to MEM at that same time. Typicaly I'm past immigration and custom control just in under 25 minutes. That leaves still some time for a BBQ sandwich by the B17 gate  Wink

The NWA timetable itself recommends a minimum connection in MEM from an international to a domestic city of exactly 1 hour, so as long as you aren't rounding the connection time up in your post, you should be fine. Even if its a little bit less (i.e. 50-55 minutes) you will be fine as long as you are closer to the front of the A330 from Amsterdam. Less than that is starting to push it, though.

If you can do one hour at EWR, you can do it at MEM- i say go for it- the airport is small and easy.

Check your itenerary, I believe that KL flight is operated by NWA. I just bought a ticket to AMS, and I really wanted to fly through MEM because its a smaller and nice airport, and NW international is supposed to be nice, anyway I dont believe KL serves MEM on their own metal anymore.

One more time, thanks all.

United319 is right, KL code shares AMS-MEM with NW. It is operated by NW metal, which is fine for me.
