Origin Of Water Cannon Salute

Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:42 am

what is the exact origin of the water cannon salute? i know they're used for retiring crewmembers, first flights or final flights of certain types to certain airports and other such fun times. does anyone know how this originally got started?

Back in the days when ocean liners were a prime method of transport, harbor fireboats would do similar things with the water for whatever the occasion was. At some point (and I have no idea exactly when), the tradition expanded to aviation...

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say sometime in the 1970s or 1980s....

Because at the time of open cockpits this was the preferred method of pilots getting showers after eating bugs for the whole trip. Then the pilot could jump out of his plane and all the people see how clean he is and want to go flying.
