Winglets On AA 757s

TULSA, Okla. – American Airlines announced today plans to return more than 60 employees to full Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) positions at its Tulsa Maintenance Base.

This will result in pay increases for all of these employees in the form of license and skill premiums. In addition to these AMTs, the company announced plans to adjust its manning to backfill their vacated positions. In total, American Airlines anticipates over one hundred employees will receive recalls or reassignments.

Carmine Romano, Vice President - Tulsa Base, noted that success at the base would not have been possible without the support of Transport Workers Union Local 514, which has been critical to the recovery process.

These recalls and reassignments are due to additional work coming into the Tulsa overhaul base. It currently is operating two Boeing 757 winglet-modification lines and plans to open two more lines, operating all four lines seven days a week. Installing winglets on aircraft increases fuel efficiency and is critical to the fuel and financial savings that American requires.

So How many 757s have AA fitted with winglets? And how many are they expecting to do?? Initially I thought they were going to fit 20 757s with winglets, but this makes it sound like far more than that.

The original plan was 20 but they have decided to put them on a majority if not all of them. Also, they will be installing them on all 77 737's

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear they'll all get winglets - they look great! Wish they'd spruce up the interior as well!!

I flew one of the wingleted 757's and asked one of the pilots whether he could see a reduced fuel consumption when he flew the wingletted 757 versus the non on sfo to stl and he said he could not-I know this is annecdotal and that AA would not installl them without empiracal evidence-but

1. Do the winglets reduce maximum take off weight and "cost" fuel to lift to crusing altittue?
2. How much do they cost as an aftermarket item?
3. How much as a percentage do they save?

1) No change to certificated MTOW. Potential small increase in runway limited weight. Slightly heavier airframe structure more than compensated for by increased performance.

I'm questioning American's logic in announcing these new hires. American needs to think about what these employees are going to do once they finish the winglet work. They don't have enough third party work to justify keeping these employees, nor are there many carriers out there (at least in the US) that would use American's maintenance services.

Wonderful news to hear it so good to hear the hardworking men/women of all the major airlines are getting call back to work the winglet is a plus.....Bravo AA.

Like FXramper said the people in question are recalls, not new hires. When comes right down to it AA needs the manpower to get these aircraft outfitted in a timely manner. Don't forget that AA also plans to outfit the rest of their 737's as well. Who's to say what sort of third party work they will get in the mean time. Plus there's normal attrition that you have to take into account between now and when all AA 757's are outfitted with winglets.

It happens.

The majority of the recalls still work for AMR in some capacity. More of a lateral move in the company.

AA is also looking at a short term lease of the former DL hangar at DFW to speed up the MD-80 galley mods. They may have already worked out a deal with the airport. The mod work being done is partial removal of the aft galley, then installing 4 seats in it's place.

One of the gripes of AA's mechanics has been that as mechanics retired or left AA, none of the furoughed mechanics have been recalled. It appears that between the amount of work at TUL and the number of mechanics that have retired, AA is now able to undertake a recall.

I assure you that AA would not be recalling/promoting these TWU union workers if it did not have a long-term plan for what to do with them. AA knows full-well that the entire 737/757 winglet modification program will be complete in the coming months, and they wouldn't bring back these employees if they didn't think they would have work for them.
