US Announces New PDX Service!

Mon Mar 12, 2007 11:58 pm

TEMPE, Ariz., March 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways (NYSE: LCC) is
making things even rosier for Portland residents with new non-stop seasonal
summer service between Portland (Oregon) International Airport and
Charlotte/Douglas International Airport on May 28.

US Airways customers in Portland will enjoy daily service to US Airways'
largest hub, where they can connect to other US Airways destinations
throughout the Eastern U.S., Central America, the Caribbean and even Europe.
Meanwhile, loyal, long-time US Airways customers in Charlotte will have
non-stop access to an additional West Coast destination.
US Airways Senior Vice President of Schedule Planning and Alliances Andrew
Nocella said, "This new route is another example of the strong national
network we have as a result of the America West - US Airways merger in
September 2005. We're pleased to offer our customers easier access to the
destinations they've told us are important to them."
US Airways will operate the route using Airbus A320 aircraft, seating 12
in the first class cabin and 138 in coach. The flight schedule is as follows:

Flight
Number Origin Destination Departure Arrival Service Starts
503 Charlotte Portland 7:20 p.m. 9:57 p.m. May 28, 2007
502 Portland Charlotte 10:50 p.m. 6:38 a.m. May 28, 2007

US Airways will also enhance service between its Philadelphia hub and
Portland this summer with the addition of a second daily roundtrip flight
beginning on July 19. The route will also be operated using Airbus A320
aircraft. The flights will be available for booking beginning March 17. The
flight schedule is as follows:

Flight
Number Origin Destination Departure Arrival Service Starts
261 Portland Philadelphia 11:22 a.m. 7:20 p.m. July 19, 2007
502 Philadelphia Portland 7:40 a.m. 10:30 a.m. July 20, 2007

Great news for us! We've been waiting for CLT service since the merger, and more PHL is icing on the cake!

Strange that flight 502 is both PHL-PDX and PDX-CLT...

Sounds great. How are you guys going to work two red-eyes and other PHX/LAS inbounds from two gates? You guys need a larger bag room just for yourself. You guys and Continental have grown in PDX in the last few years. I can't believe you both use that donut size belt!

UA has a daily to Washington, DC, JetBlue to JFK and CO to Newark from Tucson. A year ago there was nothing so service to the East has improved greatly.

We can handle two mainline flights simultaneously with that cramped little room, but it's not fun. If we ever get a third flight over the same time period, or if CO does two at once, we would have to move. Problem is...where?

Well it is good to see US finally "Discovering" Portland....since they didn't serve PDX for the longest time!

Technically they did very shortly just after the PSA takeover. We have old USAir stickers on our bag chute. It didn't last long, and I don't think it was ever an eastward connection.

The additional flight from PDX to PHL is absolutely useless when it comes to trying to make connections to Europe. What they really need is a 6:30am departure 3:30pm arrival to make the FRA, and MAN flights. Hel the new schedule doesn;t connect to any of the new european cities ie: ZRH, BRU, ATH.

I was thinking the same thing. The flight out of SEA times well with all of US' flights, yet this one does nothing. The only other thing I can think of is that US doesn't want to steal Europe-bound pax away from their Star partner, LH, which operates the PDX-FRA flight and thus connections elsewhere. I think US would be better off selling tickets through the codeshare instead of pissing off LH. Most Europe-bound flight searches on the UA website to/from PDX has them on the LH flight also.

WN also added TUS-MDW last year, and has a second daily starting up this spring/summer.

Where did the times of the PHL-PDX and vice versa flights come from in the original posting? Both of the versions of this press release which I've seen have different, better times:

Number Origin Destination Departure Arrival Service Starts
503 Charlotte Portland 7:30 p.m. 10:07 p.m. May 28, 2007
502 Portland Charlotte 10:50 p.m. 6:38 a.m. May 28, 2007

Number Origin Destination Departure Arrival Service Starts
261 Portland Philadelphia 8:30 a.m. 4:28 p.m. July 19, 2007
502 Philadelphia Portland 5:30 p.m. 8:20 p.m. July 20, 2007

The 2nd US FRA flight (767) departs PHL at 2015, the MAN flight departs at 2030, the ZRH flight departs at 1810, the BRU flight departs at 2030 - plenty of connecting time for any of those flights. The only problem is ATH, which because of distance has to be an early departure. Remember we are talking mid-July + schedules here.
We are but a moment in this vast Universe and when gone we will never have existed.

Corporate already made it clear that they wanted this flight to connect to the domestic evening departures from PHL, for what it's worth..

The original email sent out by the company. I have not seen any subsequent releases, but I suppose I should since even the flight numbers have been mis-stated. The ones you link do match up with what we had been hearing at work and I believe are indeed correct.

I sure wish US Airways used a A321 on the Charlotte route.

KPDX"...I'm sure one day we will see the A321 on one of the routes that US Airways operates out of PDX......I hope to see more out of US Airways from Portland in the future.....What's going on with United and American out of PDX? There air service has been stagnant for years now...

We (UA) just fly to our hubs. Don't expect any point to point any time soon. We do add a red-eye IAD trip for the summer. We could use a second or maybe third year round IAD departure like SEA and SAN has. We been keeping around 24 departures a day. We been keeping all mainline on our SFO/LAX flights, so thats always good.

Beyond their hubs, they don't do much P2P. The only thing left would be a MIA service on AA, but I cannot see that happening for a very long time.

Again, good to see US back in PDX...I always wondered why they dropped PDX like it was hot!!?? But when looking at the route map of USAir back then, their presence on the West Coast was anemic.......which made me mad at the time, what the heck was the point of PSA then?

AA hasn't done much of anything. They fly with 90%+ load factors but never add any more flights. STL service was pulled quite a while ago leaving only DFW and ORD.

Thats nice to see, I hope next they will think about sending SMF a flight or two from PHL and or CLT. And if you think Americans service to PDX is bad, its pretty much non existant here, along with Northwest and even Continental.

Around 1995 US either ran or was supposed to run a PDX-PIT flight. I only recall this because when I moved to PDX in that year, I was all set to take an award flight on US, and the flight either didn't start or only lasted a few months (my recollection was that it never started), so I traded my US miles with a friend in San Francisco for her TWA miles, since I now couldn't use mine, and US flew closer to where she was headed (Asheville, NC). Someone else may be able to pin this down more precisely.

I would really like to see American reinstate PDX-STL or even Southwest........I'm also surprise that Portland only has a single flight to Washington DC.....Maybe Alaska or Jetblue will eventually add service to DC......Anyway this has been a good year for PDX when it come to addtional air service...Hopefully all of those vacant gates will be filled one day..Can't wait to see what is going to happen in 2008!

Southwest flies to MCI so STL isn't out of the realm of possibility...
And blame the perimeter restrictions at DCA for PDX not having more flights to D.C. Hardly any carriers are going to do point-to-point transcon, and IAD is pretty much locked up by UA. If anything, possibly AS to IAD sometime in the future. Note, I'm not including BWI in this conversation.

UA runs two A320's in the summer to accommodate Int'l. demand. At one point, the early morning departure was a 757, but it's been A320's for a while now.

Senators Packwood and Hatfield lobbied hard for the original PDX-IAD nonstop, and I think Wyden (replaced Packwood) finally got it for them.
