Short Flights With Big Planes

Tue Mar 13, 2007 1:51 am

I just booked PHL-BOS on US and was pleasantly surprised to find out I'll be on a 757 for a flight that's less than an hour in the air (~300 miles). I'm also impressed that they can support this route hourly through at least half the day, with an A320 if not a 757.

At least in the US, big planes don't usually take short routes (unlike Japan, where 747s can shuttle people within the country).

What other flights have very large planes for the relatively short distance?
Why yes, in fact, I am a rocket scientist...

I flew on a DL flight between ATL and MIA on a 767-300 a few years back. I'm not sure if they still use it today, but I think they still use one between ATL and FLL.

The 757s were standard on all BA UK Shuttle flights from the arrival of the type with BA until the early part of this decade.

They often had a second on standby in the days when they guaranteed a seat if you turned up on time and I've regularly flown on a 757 back up LHR - MAN or vv with 20 or less on board.

You'll find this on quite a few ATL-Florida routes on DL as well as some cities in neighboring states.
ATL-JAX has a few daily 767-300's on the route, as well as 757's.
ATL-MCO has 767-300s and 767-400s and at one time had 777s and MD-11s on the route.
In the past, I've been on a 767-300 for both CVG-ATL and BWI-ATL.

**On this note, I'll be flying TPA-ATL (407 miles) on a 767-300 this coming Friday evening.  biggrin

AA operates 757's to a few cities in Florida from MIA. They also send a few A300 to MCO from MIA, which is only 192 miles. The ironic part is when I flew MIA-MCO on an A300 last year, someone made this same observation getting on the plane at MIA for MCO. They were surprised they were getting a "big jet" for such a short flight.

They also used to do LHR-CPH-LHR.

Other regulars I can think of;

JNB-CPT with SAA on types like the A342, 343, 346 and 744
MAD-LPA/TFN on IB with their A340's.
MAD-FRA on IB with an A340

Not to mention loads of short hops throughout the middle east with larger aircraft and in South East Asia region. It's very common in most countries there and much of Asia.

Daily AV 757 for BOG-MDE-BOG and BOG-CLO-BOG, the first one only 25 min and the later 30 min.

Also, there's a 762 for BOG-CLO, which continues to MAD, but still part of their netwokrk, as you can book it without any problem, also on the way back CLO-BOG.

Next flights: AV BOG-ADZ-BOG, AV-UA BOG-IAD-ORD-IAD-BOG, BOG-FLL-BOG, LA BOG-MIA-BOG J

US uses Airubs A319 (?) for a daily flight between PHX and TUS. The flight is about 20 minutes or less in the air.
A one time, UA used 737s between Stockton, CA and Modesto, CA which is all of 30 miles. At one time there were a number of flights between Oakland and San Francisco, CA.

This was United on a 747... and was essentially a ferry from the MX facility at OAK, to SFO to launch the intercontinental.

Although it was a ferry, they did sell seats, and it was a popular flight for Frequent Flyer's needing mileage segments.

You could literally park at OAK, hop the 10 minute flight, and ride BART back to OAK.

Sometimes, if the winds and traffic patterns cooperated, you didn't even circle - it was lift off on one side of the bay, and touchdown on the other, no need to even raise the gear.

One of those flights had total of 6 people including myself.

I guess NW find it cheaper to use DC9 there then using their CRJs

AC uses 762s, 763s, 333s and occasionally 343s on the YYZ YUL shuttle. And shortly they will be operating the 773 on the route, at least for awhile, this will have to be the shortest 773 route anywhere.

AA #2146 (ORD-DTW)/AA #1904 (DTW-ORD) operates with a B757 (~235 miles?), alongside UA and NW.

On Friday and Saturday though, EQP CHG had it to a 763. Yesterday was downgraded, S80, the inbound was net-oversold by 53.. ouch!

I've done EZE-MVD and return many times on AA and typically you get a drink and pretzels before take off. Depending on the runway being used and direction of take off/landing, the flight can be :22-:50 minutes. Last week I flew it and it was :22 mins, very odd to be on a 763 for such a short flight.

They also send a few A300 to MCO from MIA, which is only 192 miles.

That flight leaves MCO for MIA at about 0700 to connect to their Latin America destinations.

Also the recent DXB closing have made some realitively short flights for all types of a/c.

Flew on QF 744 between SYD and BNE last year in April. Believe flight continued on to LAX as I boarded at SYD Int'l Terminal and arrived at BNE Int'l Terminal. Just looked for flight number on Qantas website and could no longer find the flight so don't know if this is still being offered. Amazing short take-off roll for the short 65 minute flight.

Cheers,

Peter

I've done ATL-TPA on DL 763's and 764's a number of times. It's great and when the flight is empty you begin to wish TPA was about 3x farther from ATL.

TG does BKK-CNX with 772's, 744's and A310's. The flight is a little under an hour. In October I flew BKK-CNX a TG 777 up and an ancient A310 back down. Nice to have so much space (and a meal) for such a short flight.

TG also does BKK to Phuket with 744's and (I think) 772's -- that can't be much more than an hour either.
If its not a Boeing I ain't going

ET704 CDG-BRU and ET705 BRU-CDG on a 767.... 140 nm or so

Quoting Litz (Reply 20):
This was United on a 747... and was essentially a ferry from the MX facility at OAK

If MX flights count, AA probably has the current record with flight 9652 on Jan 18. A 4-minute 777 flight to ferry the bird back from maintenance at AFW to DFW.

plenty of QF 767 and some A332(?) between MEL and SYD. I know UA uses a 747, but that is really to LAX via SYD
