Numerous Diversions To Maine 3/16/07

Sat Mar 17, 2007 2:34 pm

For those here in Maine and New England, who care, we saw some uncommon diversions here in Maine yesterday due to the storm in the Northeast. I've never seen so many diversions to Maine during storms previous!

At PWM...

CO 382 IAH-BOS-737-7 diverted to PWM, departed for BOS a short time later before diverting a second time to BGR where it appears to remain as of 06:00Z this morning.

B6 1294 PIT-BOS -E190 diverts to PWM

B6 1264 AUS-BOS-E190 diverts to PWM

B6 482 LGB-BOS-A320 diverts to PWM

At BGR...

ICE 631 KEF-BOS-757-2

EIN 133 SNN-BOS- A333

LH422 FRA-BOS-747-400

AF 332 CDG-BOS-747-400, later departed for BOS and was again diverted, this time to YUL.

DL 1642 ATL-BOS- 757-later departed for BOS, attempted approach and looks as if it went to IAD.

AA 2276 ORD-BOS-MD-82, diverted to BGR, and then returned to ORD

And while not a diversion, nonetheless noteworthy, BGR also saw an AN-124 routed JAX-BGR-Tenerife yesterday

I thought I was seeing double last night when a second BA 772 came in to YUL... It departed about 50 minutes later for BOS where it seems to have landed.

The AF 744 is still on the apron, no idea when it will depart.

S. (praying my flights will make it in ... weather is still unpleasant, but at last cargo doesn't complain about diversions)

What do all these international passengers do in Maine?

Do they clear them through US immigration?

Do they go to hotels or are they sleeping at the airport?

Who handles them on the ground?

I don't know if PWM has FIS since they don't have current international service. They do have facilities (they have done charters in the past). I'm sure arrangements can be made.

Believe it or not, Portland comes fully equipped with hotels, restaurants, ya know, stuff you find around airports/cities/etc  Wink

I guess no one has pictures from PWM or BGR. That had to be some good viewing for those that had the chance.

...Yes, we're from Maine, yes, we have running water.

PWM also saw 3 Air Wisconsin CRJs that were destined to PHL yesterday. (nothing all that interesting, but a non scheduled stop nonetheless.)

All of the international flights that wound up in Maine ended up at BGR, and they handle international diversions all the time. I would assume (don't know for sure though) that they just pulled into the international terminal and were cleared through customs. Diversions like that aren't all that uncommon for BGR, so they must have a system in place.

PWM is capable of handling international passengers, but they don't have a large scale operation by any means. There is a small customs/immigration building located on the opposite side of the field from the terminal. They don't work with more than private jets and the occasional charter, but there are still people there if they are truly needed.

I had to designate BGR as an alternate for one of my airborne flights into the NE yesterday, since his original alternate had cratered and BGR was the only thing legal I could name with the fuel I had onboard. He landed at his destination OK, so I didn't have to go to BGR, but if I had, a quick turnaround would have been needed since the whole storm system was headed towards BGR, and it too would soon get clobbered. I ended up using CMH and RDU as alternates the rest of the night...

BGR does have the facilities as it handles international air rage flight diversions. So they do have everything there.

Maine, a fitting diversion point. It gives credance to the 'Ahha, can't get thar from here' joke. I do love that state though. The people from there are real. My Grandpa is one of them.
