The two hangers will paint new 747's, 777, and 767...Hopfully the dreamliner also...................I think our proximity to Seattle played a role with this decision making.........The arcticle can be found in the front page of Satuday's Oregonian title "BOEING TAPS PORTLAND FOR JET-SIZE PAINT JOB"..Great job Port of Portland!

I think they're painted in the large hangars at BFI. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Correct. There is a large paint shop across Highway 526 from the main factory. Planes are towed across a bridge at night (since traffic pretty much stops to watch).

The PDX facility has done airline conversion work (a few of UA's 772s went their to be converted for their new owners) so it makes sense to leverage it for Boeing work now that all widebody production is ramping up.

Boeing has had airplanes painted at PDX before, but with all the orders and the lack of capacity at Paine, Boeing needs it. And yes, the proximity of PDX I'm sure was a factor. Good for Portland!

The paint shops for the 737's are pretty much at capacity right now, too!

I think Boeing take advantage of some of the excess property at PDX.......Seattle will always be the largest of the two airport and Portland has penty of land to spare....................

I think Boeing should take advantage of some of the excess property at PDX.......Seattle will always be the largest of the two airport and Boeing top aircraft producer, but Portland has penty of land to spare....................Were also very close too so both cities could win from Boeings successes...........

At the 2 times I've flown in and out of PDX, I think I've seen every airplane made by the civilian western world, from the 747-400 down.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Agreed. This will alow them to buy cheap property at rock bottom prices. Lets have a PDX spotters thread about whos going to get painted.

All twin-aisle airplanes are painted in PAE, while single-aisle airplanes are painted in RNT or BFI.

The largest hangar at BFI on the Boeing side is for flight test.

I'm glad to see Boeing increasing their presence in the Pacific Northwest.

BFI has a 2 bay Paint Hanger, one baay for 737, one for 757. It was builtin the early 90's. I designed the insulated walkable ceilings in it. They can heat it up to 130 F to bake the paint.

I believe the PAE paint hanger is a single bay.

So, when does the work begin?
And, how many jobs does this involve? Transfers or new hires?

What will Boeing do with the space they no longer use at Paine?

Actually, heavies with nothing aboard except fuel will be quite capable of taking off on 28R/10L  Smile Even so, the tower will probably favor 10R/28L for these birds because the hangars in question are on the south end of the field...  Wink

I'm wondering if those hangers will be used for the 787 somehow. I'm really unsure of why Boeing would not do the painting in PAE, but I'm sure they have a good reason.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

It will be nice to see some 747-400's and 777-300's come into PDX this summer. If anybody didn't know, Skywest moved out of the southern hangar. They are now in a smaller hangar next to United's Air Freight building.

Sounds like Portland is going to be the new darling of the spotters crowd......good, the database could use more shots taken at PDX!!

Ever notice how all the good stuff happens to a place after you move away!

I don't think this is Boeing's first flirtation with Portland, I remember as a kid, (About a hundred years ago) there use to be Boeing buildings way out on what was then called I-80N (I-84 now), I want to say around 181st. Any oldtimers remember that?

If I am correct, Boeing already has some other operations and facilities in the PDX area, including away from the airport.
Perhaps they are trying to spread out more of the paint work to PDX as there may be limits in physically expanding the facilities at PAE & BFI, the proposed faster pace of assembly/manufacturing of aircraft (especially the 787) and general demand from orders in the near future at current sites. Based on what is suggested in other posts, PDX will get the 777/747 paint work so perhaps PAE's paint shop can concentrate on the 787's, with the possible special painting procedures that may be required for it as well as the fast production rate. BFI would continue with the 737's and related future models. PDX could also be used for 777/747 series repaints along related major mx work, freeing up more space at PAE too.

Not to be the technicality-obsessed thread crasher, but factory-fresh jets flying PAE/BFI/RNT-PDX aren't going to be coming in particularly heavy. You could manage with less!

This is just awesome news. Nothing like heavies roaring off over the Columbia on a mid-summers day.

Good times.

If they use the paint facilities in PDX, will they demolish 1 or 2 of the paint hangars at PAE and use the area for pre-delivery-ramp space?

Here is a link to the story out of the Oregonian:
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/orego...101941120460.xml&coll=7&thispage=2

"...Boeing began looking for a painting site because it is renovating three such hangars in Everett, Wash. In addition, new space was needed because of the demands on Everett from production of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner."

I assume these will be the 2 former Pamcorp hangars next to the Fedex facility.

Anyways PDX in my opinion has much better spotting options then any of the Seattle area airports. The parking garage is great for either of the two mains and 33rd, 82nd and Marine drive also offer great vantage points. Wish I still had my badge when I worked the ramp for Ogden years ago now.

It sounds like a convert to 787 job, with PDX becoming the 777/747 completion site.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.
