Plane Made From Carbon Fiber!

Mon Mar 19, 2007 7:49 am

would it be possible to make a plane out of carbon fiber? i mean there using composite for some parts on the 787, but would it be possible to use carbon fiber on some parts, or would it be to expensive? i know some cars are made entirely out of carbon fiber, and those cars cost like 500k. so i can only imagine how much a plane would cost if it was made of carbon fiber.

787 is mostly made of carbon fiber, fuselage, wings

Quoting Fl370 (Thread starter):

There are many planes made of Carbon Fiber........The Beech Starship comes to mind, along with several kit planes.

I'm not sure what you mean with your question. The 787 extensively uses carbon fiber composites. It is up to 50% of the plane. Parts that can be made of carbon fiber are being made of it, but there are many parts that need more traditional materials like steel or aluminum. In particular many o the functioning parts involved with the operation of the plane are made with metals.

The A380 uses composites, but uses GLARE, which is more familiar and easy to work with, but is not as light.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
