AC YYZ Rant

Tue Mar 20, 2007 5:21 am

After coming back from a recent trip, in which we waited over an hour on the ground in bridgetown, we arrive at the new wing of Terminal 1. I guess its not as hight tech as we all think, for after waiting in a nice long line at immigration, i know nothing you can do, you would expect to have your bags waiting on the carosoul, right? No we waited over an hour for our bags to come out. I don't know whether this was an AC or YYZ problem, maybe someone would be kind enough to enlighten me, but its rediculous especially since this is a new wing oppened less than two months ago. And I know its march break, but i've never had that type of problem before. Anybody else had similar problems, especially in the new international wing at T1?

Since the closure of T2, T1 has been experiencing growing pains here and there. It's not surprising, perhaps a little disappointing. Once everything is running as it should this type of thing will not happen.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience with Air Canada/CYYZ's Terminal  Sad As YOWza mentioned, the closing of Terminal 2 put a lot of stress on T1 in general. It is sort of like a 'growing pain' as YOWza also mentioned, and once everything smooths over, this sort of issue should be very uncommon. As for the long wait for your bags, I have had this problem flying with A/C recently. They are a good airline, but I have had a few problems with them throughout my time flying with them. Perhaps there was a problem on the tarmac with the ground crew? I'm not sure.. perhaps someone else can tell us.

Cheers.

When I went through YYZ a few weeks ago with Air Canada, we flew through customs etc, overall it was actually a pretty good setup I thought.
It would have been nice if they knew what was going on with the plane though, had one of those "well the plane is supposed to be here but they havent towed it over yet so an hour delay" "ok they broke it another half hour" "ok they said they are almost done, 30 minutes till it's here" "oh screw it heres some meal vouchers come back in 3 hours" "ok heres your 5 hours late old beater"...

I flew into T1 from FLL on March 15. I too waited for about 40 minutes for my bags after Customs. An AC maintenance guy appeared and shut down the carousel, ran down, re-emerged, turned the thing on and instantly the bags were delivered. Obviously a jam along the way, but I had the impression that the baggage system was monitored to prevent big jam ups.

Overall I was impressed with the new wing....

The GTAA is responsible for the baggage system in the new terminal so it was not an AC employee you saw. Our people are not allowed to clear jams anymore. We have to call the GTAA and when they see fit to show up it will be looked at.

I've heard that there's some design flaws with the baggage room areas as well. I'm hearing from work that its design is typically Canadian ie: obsolete before it's even built.

Ground crews can't fit certain container carriers into the bagroom which is ridiculous. Also, I know there's a staff shortage on the ramp in YYZ.

Let' be fair here, you are a cargo guy by title. What do you know about a baggage system you never use, or perhaps you try to use.

It is automated, and contracted out by the GTAA.

If it jams it is cause by improper spacing by the folks who load it on the inbound as this post is referring too. I suppose Air Canada should retrain the staff to ensure the system works to optimize the performance.

There are design flaws in everything in life including the minimal Air Canada staffing after 10:00 p.m. because knowone will work overtime, as it does not fit the goals and objectives of the union.

??

There are often jams at T3 Customs...

Whenever I've come back from Mexico, or from the US, I've spent 20-30 minutes waiting in Customs, and the wait in the baggage area has been even worse --

In one instance, the ramp guys decided to take lunch, right during "Charter-hour" when all 4 or 5 skyservice flights for the day all land withing 30 minutes of each other. We spent almost an hour and a half waiting for our baggage!!!

It's all part of the airport experience. Plan for delays, period.

Last year at YUL all the US Customs guys had a coffee break at the same time for 20 minutes.

And what is your expertise? I have spoken with rampie's that have to use the crap the GTAA built. Guys that have to wait for some GTAA guy(or there contracted employee to make you happy) to show up because our people are not allowed to clear even the simplest jams. If you believe that the only reason jams happen is because they are not loaded on the belt correctly then your out to lunch.

Where did you get this gem from?  Yeah sure

First I've heard of it.

This is a common problem at YYC as well. Even if you leave 10 feet of space the so-called "state of the art" brand new baggage belts can barely cope. Of course, this is after you've already waited for 10 mins to dispense because another crew got in before you with a different flight. Sure your flight will be despensed on a different belt, but the brilliant engineers designed it so both belts are end to end from each other  Yeah sure But it's typical in North America. Do everything the absolute cheapest way possible and of course never consult the people who'll actually use it everyday. Long-term thinking doesn't exist here.
