Why CO91 TLV-EWR Not On Fridays For Summer?

Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:19 am

I'm going to Israel for five weeks in May and June and am booked on Continental. I'm flying from ATL to TLV via EWR. For the return flight to EWR, I was originally booked on flight 91, which departed around midnight and arrived in the early morning. However, I logged into my Onepass account tonight to see if my flights were filling up and noticed that CO had rebooked me on an 8:00am flight from TLV to EWR the next day. I called CO because I don't have the money to spend on a hotel in Tel Aviv for the extra night. The agent was great and booked me on flight 85 (departs 11:40am and is the flight I wanted to be on anyways, but couldn't because it was too expensive when I booked) for the day I originally was going to leave. She explained that CO cancelled flight 91, but didn't know why. Why has CO changed its TLV schedules so drastically?

It is bookable and in our res system. It is also bookable through our website. I'd call back and talk to someone else.

Sorry, I posted this kind of hastily. She explained that flight 91 is not operating on Fridays, which is the day I am returning. Incidentally, when I look at the fares and schedules, Fridays are the most expensive days (now, not when I booked) and are the only days when 91 does not operate.

Interesting info. It may have to do with loads and the Sabbath. Definitely interesting.

so the non-LY day is the most expensive...?

I knew that flights returning to TLV on Friday night are popular...because after a break or vacations, people prefer to get home earlier than late Saturday night (Sunday is the first day of the week).
I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)

I wonder why it is not operating in June. There is a flight CO91 on July 6th and the rest of the fridays from then on departing at the usual time.

Weird...

What's very strange is that the flight was bookable for a while (Obviously I booked it) and within the last few days CO decided to change the schedule. I'm not upset since I'm now on the flight I wanted anyway but couldn't afford, but it's strange nonetheless.

According to the CO PC timetable flight 91 TLV2355 - EWR0445 is not operating on Friday between May 19 and June 23. The aircraft RON's at TLV and leaves as Flight 125 Day 6, TLV 0800 - EWR 1250.

This must have been changed in the last few days as I checked the PC timetable before updating. I had just updated a week or less ago and Flight 91 was daily before the update I just loaded.

The rest of the CO EWR 777 schedule looks unchanged. So, the delay of the TLV-EWR flight from 2355 to 0800 can only cut into maintneance downtime at EWR and maybe be done due to the Sabbath. For what it's worth, Shavuot is a Jewish Holiday that happens on Wed May 23, the week following the change from Fri night to Sat morning.

What does this change do to turnarounds at EWR? Did they really have a 772 sitting from 445ish to mid-afternoon?

Or did they have multiple 772's with moderately long turns which are now not so long?

It would be weird to single out that holiday though, since there are a ton of other ones throughout the year that you could make the same argument for changing the schedule for. Also, it would only be that one week in terms of the people who would actually care. Perhaps it's an experiment of sorts to see what they can do about loads on their Sabbath flights? Collect some data and then see if it makes sense to modify the Fri/Sat schedule to get better yields?

The reason I posted that particular Holiday was that it was the only Jewish holiday shown during the period the flight is retimed (on a Jewish website).

As for EWR turn arounds, CO has numerous 772ER aircraft coming through and lots of ground time. DEL and the TLV flight under discussion arrive about daybreak. After long haul flights to places like PEK, DEL, TLV, HKG, these aircraft need a break. CO has the flexibility to route these aircraft differently as thing develop.

As a note, one day I was looking at CO's EWR-DEL flight which was delayed an hour waiting for an aircraft to arrive from HKG. Now that's utilization.

According to CO's PC schedule, the Saturday morning flight is operating from 5/18 thrugh 6/23, then goes back to the Friday evening time. I just refreshed my PC timetable file and it waid my file was current.

To use the old expression......Houston we have a problem.....it seems that CO is in the process of tweaking some schedules at he moment.
