WHY NO Flights From PWM To Canada?

Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:54 am

Any fellow canucks know why there is no service from PWM to any points in Canada? PWM seems to generate a lot of O&D traffic...I know there's service in to MHT...by why no PWM?

Also, any AA fans know why they pulled out of PWM? B6 seems to be doing well and has kept their A320's to JFK and now AirTran is offering ATL and from Saturday MCO.

Because since American Eagle bought Business Express.... once a major player in PWM..... Eagle has desimanted their old route network.

Because PWM really is not set up for international service.

On a side note: Flight Tracker shows a Delta 767-300 ferrying up to PWM tonight..? Wonder what that is about. Is a Cruise Ship in town...?

Back until up around 2000, Air Canada offered a few daily Beech 1900s on the PWM-YUL route. Since YUL is pre-clearence, the only requirement is that the airport (PWM) has customs; much like LGA isn't set up for international service, it still sees flights to YOW, YUL and YYZ.

As for Eagle, don't really know. They had served ORD-PWM, but I'm guessing UA ran them off the route, not to mention leakage to MHT due to WN's presence on MHT-MDW (much lower fares there).

Also, pretty sure there is no FL service to ATL - it's BWI and the weekly MCO flight. Not a whole lot of room for expansion out of ATL for FL currently; those C gates are packed, and the D gates are right up there as well.

Most pax en route to the U.S. now go through U.S. customs pre-clearance inside Canada. (YVR,YYZ,YUL,YOW,YHZ to name a few). I realize that it might still take some setting up in order to properly handle even this type of international traffic, but the real issue here is probably just lack of demand (that or A/C are more profitable on other routes).

Thanks DeltAirlines...you're right, the FL service is to BWI...

And...EMBQA, I too wondered about the DL 763 to PWM...wasn't even sure that the runway was long enough (though I realize it was extended recently).

If AC did have YUL service...I would suspect they did drop it due to lack of traffic...but I'd still be surprised that AC couldn't fill an RJ to YYZ. I think AC is leaving a lot of $$ on the table by not serving more pt-to-pt transborder flights north of Boston.

True it is that most passengers are screened inbound to PWM so they wouldn't need customs....seems strange. Literally every (and I mean EVERY) flight I have taken in/out of PWM is full.

Lastly, I've heard of AA dismantling all their acquisitions...but they also served PWM from LGA/BOS/ORD...that traffic just moved to B6 and DL (now in to JFK)

I remember going to PWM in 1990. There was service by a Canadian Airlines International partner. I don't know if it was to Montréal, Halifax, or Toronto. And I can't remember what kind of aircraft was used. Does anyone remember?

I recall in mid 1980's flying from YHZ to PWM on a B1900. It continued to BOS but I can't recall the company. Perhaps it was Business Express.

There has been on and off service to Canada from PWM for some time now...just none in the last 5 years.

I think the largest Canadian metal to touch the tarmac at PWM has been the BAE 146, although we have also seen Dash 8s and plenty of B1900s to Toronto and Montreal. When JetBlue service was announced about a year ago now, reports came from the Jetport staff that they had people actively talking with both "Canadian Airlines" and AirTran. We all know that they got somewhere with AirTran, but nothing's been said about AC since.

With the arrival of AirTran though, there isn't any space left for a new airline to come in. Sure, a few daily B1900s could be squeezed onto the ramp, but there isn't any counter space or gate areas that haven't already been claimed. My guess is that we'll have to wait for the terminal expansion to be able to see any new airlines, and my bet is that AC is on the top of the list. (probably nothing more than the 3 or 4 daily B1900s with Air Georgian that MHT gets, but its still better than nothing. The market is there.)

As for the couple other points brought up: The Delta 767 is just a training flight that was filed. They quite often file flight plans on large aircraft like that up to PWM, but they always promptly turn around right back to JFK or ATL. (The runway could land a 767 though. 762s have seen the field even before the expansion)
American Eagle pulled out with little public explanation. They were consolidating operations in BOS, and they needed the few ERJs that we got in order to replace the Fokkers that were on the way out. Therefore, PWM got the axe. Too bad really, they had some major operations here before they left, with a good number of flights a day out to ORD, LGA, and BOS.

Thanks for the input KPWMSpotter...

Do you know if there are plans to expand the terminal? Doesn't seem to be much extra room from what I have seen on my trips there...perhaps I'm wrong.

I know the market is in PWM for transborder flights - perhaps the public should petition Westjet as an option for Mapleflot.

p.s. I've always encountered security at PWM that rivals LHR...is that a left-over policy from 9/11 when several of the hijackers transited PWM on their way to BOS with box cutters?

There are currently some plans in the works to expand the terminal. Over the next year, work will be finishing up on the cargo and GA side of the airport. Once that is done, the parking structures will all be improved in order the handle increased land side traffic from the planned terminal.

When it is done, the terminal building will extend northwest from the end of the existing structure, adding about 5 new gates capable of handling large jets. There is an entire blueprint plan available at the Jetport's website, (http://www.portlandjetport.org/) just go to "About PWM" and then "Airport Layout Plan" or "Master Plan." This plan does displace the current belly cargo building, and some of the surface lots, but there is plenty of land around the terminal that is yet to be put to use. As for an exact timeframe though, it's all still up in the air (or at least that's all that I can find out.)

I seem to recall seeing an Air Nova Dash 8 in PWM when I flew into there back in 2000 or so.
