Good for Allegiant! I assume they've done their homework, but I didn't know people would travel between two gambling cities. I guess the allure of Vegas is pretty strong...

Last night, on the local news here in Pittsburgh, the manager of the Latrobe, PA airport was talking about how he is soliciting support for a non-stop flight to the Orlando area. The news mentioned Southwest 737s, which I'm pretty sure is a guarenteed "NO" ... but perhaps Allegiant may look into the area?

While this is good for the people of GPT to have nonstop service to LAS, I don't really see how it benefits the casinos in GPT. If I live in GPT and have cheap air service to LAS, I'd be more likely to go to LAS and spend less time/money in GPT.

I doubt that many people who live in LAS will go to GPT. There's really no reason. The casinos in GPT are nice, but they are nothing compared to LAS.

The article didn't really mention it, but I'm sure one/some of the casinos are behind this new service.

I know they haven't officially announced the new LAS service, but I wonder if they will and SFB sometime in the future. Southeast was on the route for awhile until they went belly up. Only time will tell.

Not sure I understand this one. Seems the casino folks in Mississippi would be opposed to n/s service to the gambling mecca of the world and potentially bastardizing their own business. Unless G4 is looking at business travellers (casino/hotel exec's) for this?

I hear it may be SFB to GPT as well as LAS, wait for the announcement.

I agree with you. I just went to Allegiants website to see if they announced anything yet. I didn't find any press releases, but GPT is listed under the destinations list. I tried to put in dates for GPT-LAS but didn't get anything. I did see that SFB was one of the two destinations I could choose from though.

SFB-GPT is also on the route map!

It shows as a June 1 start date.

GPT-SFB will be Mon/Wed/Fri dep 5PM from SFB and dep 6:06PM from GPT
GPT-LAS will be Mon/Fri dep 1:45PM from LAS and dep GPT for the return at 7:50PM

question -- do you know why Allegiant took the air schedules off of their website?

also ... they really need to put "new service" announcements on their homepage, in my opinion. i dropped the marketing & communications department a line a few weeks ago and they said "thanks for the suggestion" ... snooze.

Here's a link GPT's press release page. The actual press release is a word document.

http://www.flygpt.com/aboutgbia/news/

I think this is the first time in a long time, if at all that an airline has come into GPT with service to two cities. This will also be GPT's first scheduled nonstop service to the west.

I plan to be on the inaugural SFB-GPT service on June 1st. I've wanted to try G4 for awhile. I just never had a reason to fly them until now.

Good news for GPT and, more specifically, the rebuilding Gulf Coast region. We'll see how long the service lasts, however. LAS will probably last longer than SFB, in my opinion.

Interestingly it says "Allegiant didn't get casino subsidies like Air Tran did to bring its planes to Gulfport. Its executives simply decided Gulfport Biloxi International Airport was the right place to grow its business.

I would guess there is some marketing support but the fact that they did it without the casino subsidy caught my eye. I wonder what they see as potential.

I see that too, Harrahs, Beau Rivage, etc. But the press release is only written for GPT outbound to SFB and LAS.
http://www.allegiantair.com/aaNews20070322a.php
So could we see something else announced, like PSP-BLI that started along with PSP-LAS? I wonder.

To be honest, besides the casinos in the area and some NASA related business, there is not a lot going on. GPT is sort of in the middle of the two main business markets on the Gulf Coast. I think they are counting on some drive in passengers from the MOB area to help make this work.

That is why I added Flyinryan99's quote. I wonder if they see potential to create a small focus city at GPT. Since they are selling packages for the casinos they may have their eye on a few other routes.

Back in the day (and sometimes now a days), ATA and Reno Air (whoever the tour operator was) used to fly charters down to the Gulf Coast from TOL. I'm wondering the same thing FATFlyer...I wonder if they will test the waters to see if they can do a small focus city here in GPT. Heck...not being too far from Alabama, could always market the southern end of the RTJ Golf Trail for us golfers  Smile Ok I'll stop dreaming, but I am just wondering if they see potential in the GPT market.

I was just in LAS last weekend and had a moment to check out Allegiant's ops while waitig for my UA/Ted flight. If they are going to keep expanding they need to get there ops in order in LAS. They ticket counter had no permanent signage. It looked like computer printer paper on the wall. The lines were long and out the door and down the sidewalk! The staff and announcements sounded friendly and efficient enough. There were a lot of MadDogs sitting on the ramp. I don't know how they can make money with all those idle birds. However they apparantly are profitable and growing. That's a rarity and I really love LAS and GPT as I and my family are gamblers! Good news all around.

i wouldn't be surprised to see Rockford to GPT added. perhaps at least one or two days a week during the summers. there's a couple of other larger markets that might be able to sustain the service, but not at all of them.

Exactly, much as PSP would only support a few markets other than BLI.

If they grow GPT it would never reach the size of the larger focus cities.

I totally agree with this statement. IF they decided to grow the operation in the future, I see no more than maybe 2 or 3 additional destinations.

Hopefully the boom in condos and condotels being built all over the coast will help give Allegiant and the rest of the carriers in GPT some additional feed.

G4 does SHV-LAS and SFB as well -- SHV is a gambling mecca just like GPT - there is traffic on the business side for the employees and executives - lots of crossover business, training and meetings. In addition remember people love a convention in LAS, so even though they live in a gambling mecca they will travel to the convention. Plus sometimes it's nice to get away from your hometown.

In addition, GPT is bound to catch traffic from the Northshore of Lake Ponchartrain if someone cannot get a seat or decent fare out of MSY.

Geaux G4!

I see traffic into GPT like PSP. Last winter Allegiant operated only PSP-LAS. This winter they brought back PSP-LAS and added PSP-BLI. Next winter there might be a couple more cities with flights into PSP.

But they both will grow slowly I think. Not like PIE which opened at a larger size from the start.

I'm sorry, but I must say that I love these guys! They really think "out of the box"!

They fly the strangest route network and still make a profit!

I think that is pretty cool!

Another airline MOB has lost out to neighbors... This is just another potential airline lost out of MOB. Something needs to change. Congrats to the folks at GPT for this addition though. It seems they worked harder for this.

MOB always seems to be left out in the cold. I'm sure the folks at GPT worked hard for this service....without question the success of this route will depend on GPT originating traffic, so like I said, I think Allegiant figures some people in the Pascagoula/Mobile area will make the hour drive to take advantage of the nonstops.

MOB's MSA population is around 200,000 more than GPT's, so you'd think at some point, airlines will take a closer look at MOB. The probalem with the Gulf South airports is that so many are in close proxiomity to each other....it's hard to really define a specific MSA, as some of them gel into each other.
