Eastern At CLE

Thu Mar 22, 2007 10:45 pm

In reading some of the discussion about Eastern below, I was trying to remember what gates EA had at CLE during the 80s. I'm pretty confident that they were on Concourse B because we always flew Piedmont...and they had 19 and 19A (Now B9 and B11) at the end of B and we'd always pass the EA gates. I remember the stylized destination names on the carpeting as mentioned in another thread.

Anyways...was hoping someone could give me an idea of EAs ops at CLE during the 80s. We're they at what are now UA's gates before UA moved over from C?

Yeah, I think they used the gates UA uses now.

I flew Eastern back in the 80's and 90-91. Gates were in the A concourse. Recall A-5, A-11 being used.

Here are two old terminal maps from my webpage....

As far as I can recall, Eastern used what are now the United Airlines gates on Concourse B and their ticket counter was what is now the Southwest ticket counter.

Long live the memory of EAL. I firmly believe that taking their L1011 flights to MCO as a kid (with the wings and the official airline of WDW, etc.) is the reason I fell in love with aviation and still have a facination for it today...

Interesting (to me, anyway): in the days before the interstate highway system killed the O&D on many short-haul flights, CLE-YIP/DTW and CLE-PIT were EA dominated routes that carried substantial amounts of traffic. Although EA's service was subject to a long-haul restriction that any YIP or PIT flights had to originate or terminate at Charlotte or a point south thereof, they managed to put up a decent schedule despite this - in the 50's and 60's they operated as many as 9 r/t to Detroit and 6 r/t to PIT using everything from M-404's to DC-8's.

Y'all may like a new addition JUST added.....

a complete Eastern Air Lines timetable from September 6, 1972 has been added.

It can be found under the "Complete airline timetables from the past" section.

Enjoy!

The Spring/Summer 1981 United Airlines Service Guide I'm looking at shows that, at that time, EA was on Concourse B, using what was then gates 13, 15, and 17.
