FCC May Drop Inflt Cell Use Plans

Fri Mar 23, 2007 10:45 am

Looks like the FCC is thinking about dropping plans on allowing inflight use of cell phones in the USA due to concerns from wireless providers of interference for ground networks.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17739316/

I will be quite happy if they do stop this. Plus, it didn't seem that the FAA was too keen on allowing inflight calls on cell phones anyway.

Thank God!!! In flight cell phone calls are the worst possible idea ever. Last thing I need is some self-important arrogant idiot of an 'important' businessman showing off by talking to his broker at 35K.

Osiris30, don't hold back dude, tell us how you really feel. I think you're not coming clean on your views of inflight cell phones.  Wink

I am not a huge fan of our friends at the FCC , however on this I applaud them. Like Osin's comments, I have no desire to sit next to some 'chatty cathy' for any length of time.

All I can say is YAY!!! The absolute worst of the air cell phoners would be those people with the annoying NEXTEL walkie talkies... BEEP! "how's it goin?" BEEP "not bad" BEEP! "blah blah blah" BEEP! That phone makes me want to send its users to next Tuesday.

If someone really has to talk that badly, there's the Airfone.

This is a little disapointing. I'd like to be able to call from the air to let people know as we're going below 10,000 ft...Especially if they are doing rounds around the airport to pick me up. Not only that, but sometimes it'd be nice to call someone to check in, etc. I wouldn't make use of this feature frequetly, but it'd be nice to be able to. I hope the FCC doesn't drop this idea!

It's the ones who WOULD make frequent use we'll be worried about. And it also means that if you work, you'll be considered "reachable" even if you aren't getting reception. You'll have to answer for why they couldn't reach you, since "they allow calls on planes now."

Too much of a hassle, not enough reward.

There is simply no privacy on an airplane. Civilized people should not subject their trapped, neighboring passengers to listening to their calls, no matter what the content might be.

E-mail, text messages and other "quiet" communications are fine by me and I will gladly pay for the access.

If someone has to make a call that badly from the air the airlines should install a sound-proof phone booth on the aircraft!

Its a shame they just cant limit it to data access. Hook up to the EVDO network and surf the net at 35,000 ft. Thats rather unobtrusive (as long as you dont surf for "adult" sites).

I totally agree with the sentiment above though, I hope there is never cell phone service in flight.

In a perfect world, if every behaved as you described, I probably would not have a problem with the sparing use of a cell phone. However, people are for the most part rude and inconsiderate of others (and it seems to be getting worse by the day) and for me or anyone else to be subjected to some chatterbox on any flight regardless of length is absurd. When was the last time while sitting in a theatre, you would hear the annoying sound of a ring tone and a subsequent conversation ensued? Trust me it happens, as a matter of fact it happened to me 2 days ago, despite all of the requests to turn off all cell phones. Believe me, planes would be no different, in fact they would be worse as you are simply trapped forced to suffer.

Call them after you land. The time it takes for you to taxi in, deplane and get your bags should be plenty of time for them to go from wherever they're waiting to the terminal.

As for letting them know your arrival time, they could always call the airline.

They had tried that, of course, and Boeing gave up on it because it wasn't producing the returns.

I've got to agree with the above, cell phone use on a plane would be a seriously bad idea. It's bad enough on the train - if I had a £ for every time I heard "HELLO!! Im' on a train!!!" when I lived in London I wouldn't need to work now.

In any case don't US carriers allow cell phone use after landing?

Trust me, if they allow cell phone use while in flight, it will result in something like that scene in "Airplane 2" where the people are fighting on the aircraft and the wrestlers are throwing people around.

Given the overwhelming negative response here, who exactly does want cell phones on a plane? I would imagine that the crew, pilots, flight attendants, etc -- I assume a reasonable fraction of A.net? -- would prefer that cell phones be banned, so may be skewing the responses here. I travel about equally business and pleasure, and can't think of one instance when I needed to make a cell phone call while flying. I did call my wife on an Airfone once as a novelty. And then there's the emergency situations like 9/11, but all bets are off in that case.

So, where is the demand coming from, and is it really that important?

It's coming from the sasme type of person you don't WANT to be able to talk on their cell phone in flight. You know the ones.. who think the world revolves around them and everyone should be subjected to listening to their BS while they yack away about some completely unimportant garbage.

I like the 'cone of silence' air travel puts on cell phone chatter. There is NOTHING worse than listening to someone talk about some BS on their phone when all you want to do is relax in your limited down time in transit.

At the gate for most of them. I usually flip my on once we hit the taxi ways so it can acquire a network, get my sms and emails downloaded, etc. before I deplane. However I won't make a call until I'm in the terminal out of courtesy to everyone standing/sitting within 6" of me during the deplaning crunch.

Turn it off when the door closes.

Turn it back on once the plane has landed and left the runway.

That's the rules here, seems to allow for PLENTY of functional use (I'm leaving now, we just landed, etc.)

If business travelers REALLY needed to talk in flight, they would have paid for the airphone. Instead, they roundly rejected paying for those calls, and many airlines have dumped them here...

Though it obviously serves a purpose, the cell phone is one of the most annoying inventions ever.
